Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Sun Feb 17 08:03:54 2019 Tuscarora Almanac - February 17, 1936 - The Book of Wrecks Brooklyn, New York New York City Board of Transportation Independent Subway System On this date in 1936 the first major wreck occurred on the new “Independent”Subway System. It was on a Monday morning near the end of the AM rush when a southbound “C” train arrived at Jay Street-Borough Hall and all passengers were discharged prior to laying up the equipment. The motorman, Elliott Abbott and one of his conductors, James Reilly proceeded south from Jay Street via the southbound express track (Tk B3) of the Smith Street Line. The train entered the tunnel at 4th Avenue and keyed by two signals when the motorman saw an oncoming train wrong-railing toward him. He applied the brakes and ran from the cab yelling to the conductor to jump. The next thing that he remembers is awakening on the roadbed next to the train. The conductor was killed in the accident. It seems that the preceding train had been laid up without the brakes being properly applied and it began to roll backwards pickup up speed along the way. The lead car of motorman’s Abbott’s train was compressed by the impact until it was about twenty feet long. Service was disrupted for several hours and the unfortunate conductor’s body was not removed until about twelve hours later. The crash resulted in the complete destruction of three cars; R-1s 212 and 378 and R-4 472. In order to replace the lost equipment the R-9 order (1650-1802) was increased from 150 to 153 cars. Source: New York Division Bulletin /February 1961, article by Mr. by Mr. Don Simon Tuscarora Almanac - February 17, 1950 - The Book of Wrecks Nassau County, New York Long Island Railroad Due to an ongoing grade - crossing elimination project in the vicinity of Rockville Centre trains are forced to use a 4000 foot section of gauntlet track in both directions. Westbound train No. 175 had departed Babylon bound for Pennsylvania Station and entered the gauntlet track about 10:30 PM. It was struck by eastbound train No. 192, a twelve car Babylon Express. The crash was so severe that some of the cars were sheered in half. There were 32 passenger fatalities. The lead cars on the respective trains were MP54A1 #1484 and MP64C # 1919. Re the Smith St wreck, some sources have said that there was a possibility that the C/R was operating the train possibly in preparation for taking the promotion test for M/M which is why the M/M survived and he did not. The speculations are of course unsubstantiated. |
