Notice some of the variations in station names. For some reason the Astor Pl station is referred to as “8th St” although from the mosaics on the station walls, I don’t think it was ever called anything but Astor Pl. The “Belmont St” station on the Jerome is now called Mt Eden Ave and the naming of the 125 St/Bway station is still referred to as “Manhattan St” which seems to indicate that the path of 125 St had not yet been changed as of 1918. The station at 149 St/Grand Concourse is still referred tp as 149/Mott and the 138/Grand Concourse station is listed as “Mott Haven” indicating that Mott Avenue in that area had not yet been changed to Grand Concourse. I don’t know if it's visible any more, but the tiles at 138/Grand Concourse did read "138 Street Mott Haven” and if you looked carefully at the original mosaics you could see where they were painted over to read 138 Street Grand Concourse. The columns also had enamel signs with the designation “MH” on them

Also the power substation on the southwest corner of 149/GC says
"IRT Mott Avenue Substation" or something like that in the stonework on top.

That would be something not easily changes since it was engraved in stone (concrete?). It probably dates back to the original subway circa 1904.

I didn't see in the article if the 42nd St shuttle started service right away on or about this date, or if modifications were made first. Any insight?

One thing which never happened - the Flushing line wound up using its own tunnel to reach Times Square (and now goes to Hudson Yards) rather than the shuttle tracks.

Though it had nothing to do with the H system opening, Malbone Street happened exactly 3 months later.

It probably would have been a nightmare to get the Flushing Line up at least 2 levels from the level of the Steinway tubes to the shuttle level which was even above the Mainline Lex.

Try checking out the NY Times around those early dates in August - I read them years ago on microfilm, and think they might have had something on when the shuttle began operation.
I haven't checked the sections about the H-system or both shuttle stations on nycsubway.org. There maybe a mention there too.

And even after climbing all up hill from Grand Central to 5 Av, the #7 tracks are still below the 6th Av line, while the shuttle tracks are above it. Standing at the north ends of the 6th Av platforms at 42 St you can hear the shuttle rumbling by overhead.
