Thanks. I happened to be doing research on the 191st Street station and came across this.

Awesome!!! The IND was well-built indeed. Also interesting that while they were planning to open a station at 178th post haste, they couldn't actually get that done until 1950...

Its just too bad the line ended at 179th Street, pretty much in the middle of nowhere, instead of 188th Street, where it could have connected to several north and south trolley/bus lines. Especially considering the tunnel actually runs all the way to 184th Street.

Were there trolleys on 188th or were they always buses?

My guess is that construction sections were only funded as far as the 179th street layup. I don't know how the sections were divided up*, but it stands to reason that the extra work required for the layup might have made 178th-184th a single section, and so for accounting or legal purposes that may have been the only section which could be funded, pending approval of further route extension.

*That said, I've seen the section/route terminology quite a bit in historical documents, and would love to know where I could research more about them.

To be honest, Francis Lewis Blvd probably would have made for a better terminal site, especially since the current location of the Franhill Mall would have made for a decent bus loop site. Although, Francis Lewis Blvd currently has the weakest bus service for a major corridor in Queens...

At one time the line was supposed to be extended farther east on Hillside Avenue to Springfield Boulevard and then possibly to Little Neck Parkway which was close to the city line. Of course none of those ever happened.
