Probably others on this board will be able to correct my inaccuracies. I should like to explain the double names of Brooklyn streetcar lines in the 1940's. Myrtle-Court. Smith-Coney Island. McDonald-Vanderbilt. Ralph-Rockaway. Sumner-Sackett. Utica-Reid.
---
Before the fare increase of July, 1948, Dad and I would be riding Coney Island Avenue approaching Bartel Pritchard Square. To my dismay, we would bail out rather than pay another nickel on the trolley to reach Park Row, a fabulous ride into Manhattan. We'd head downstairs for the Independent to get home for supper when Mom had it ready; Dad respected that request. I had no idea how inconvenient a late arrival for supper would be for Mom.
---
Sometime in the 1930's, the B&QT or BMT got the idea that they could save operator time by combining shorter routes into longer ones end-to-end, as long as the PSC said they could retain the two fares. That was done. At least in the case of Smith-Coney Island and McDonald-Vanderbilt there were two zones. I cannot vouch for the other names above, even though I rode some of them.
---
In July, 1948, the arrival of 7-cent or 8-cent fares eliminated the turnstiles on the PCC's. My favorite seat behind the operator no longer had the sloped tube down which coins and transfer tokens would be returned to the operator.

Since the PSC restricted subway fares to a nickel at the time, I’m surprised it didn’t insist that the fare on the combined route be the same.
