Tuscarora Train of the Week No. 6

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Mon Feb 11 09:15:26 2019

Tuscarora Train of the Week No. 6

New York City Transit Authority
Division B
Rt. KK 6th Avenue – Broadway/Brooklyn Local
July 1968

The “KK” was in service from July 1968 through December 1972 or about four and a half years. It was the successor to the #14 Broadway-Brooklyn Local which became the “JJ” after November 1968.
This essay will look at its operation in its first month of operation, July 1968.

The “KK” was the first and for many years the only train to use the two track connection between Broadway-Lafayette Street station on the IND 6th Avenue Line and Essex Street station on the BMT Centre Street Line. Service ran during rush hours only. The central part of the service was the operation between 57th Street – 6th Avenue and 168th Street-Jamaica Avenue with “B” skip-stop service. However there where many variations in the operation which we will look at here.

Please note that the “Broadway” referred to is Broadway on Brooklyn and not Manhattan. 168th Street = 168th Street Jamaica Avenue, 57th Street = 57th Street-Sixth Avenue, Atlantic Avenue = Atlantic Avenue – Canarsie Line, Metropolitan Avenue = Metropolitan Avenue-Ridgewood. Also the number preceding the route names are not official and used only for clarification.

No.1) 6th Avenue-Broadway-Jamaica Local

Lv: 168th Street 7:10-8:23 AM with “B” skip-stop service.
Lv: 57th Street : 6:54, 7:02, 7:10 and 7:18 AM all stops
4:08-5:33 PM with “B” skip stop service
Lv: 111th Street (to 57th Street) 6:59 and 7:08 AM all stops

No. 2) 6th Avenue-Broadway-Canarsie Local

Lv: Rockaway Parkway 6:21, 6:40 and 6:55 AM
Lv: Atlantic Avenue 6:10, 6:20, 6:38, 6:56 and 8:49 to 9:26 AM
4:53 and 4:59 PM
Lv: 57th Street (to Atlantic Avenue) 7:46-8:44 AM five trains
No. 3 6th Avenue-Broadway Local

Lv: Eastern Parkway 3:08-5:58 PM
Lv: 57th Street 8:16, 8:34 and 8:51-10:11 AM

No.4 6th Avenue-Broadway-Myrtle Avenue Local

Lv: 57th Street (to Metropolitan Avenue / Ridgewood)7:26 - 8:09 AM (4 trains)

A 6th Avenue-Myrtle Avenue routing had been included in the plans for the service after the Chrystie Street lines opened. It would have been designated as “MM” and the map color would have been green. This route was never put into service but four “KK” trains ran from 57th Street to Metropolitan Avenue at the end of the AM rush presumably to lay up at Fresh Pond Yard.

Train displayed White-White markers lights if they were operating to 57th Street, 168th Street or Rockaway Parkway, Red-Yellow for Atlantic Avenue and Red-Green for Eastern Parkway. I do not know what the markers for Metropolitan Avenue where.

Service began one July 1 with eight car trains of R-1/9’s. This was cut to six cars on July 5. The surplus cars were transferred to the “M” train.

Trains operating the “B” skip-stop service on the Jamaica Line would stop at 168th Street, 160th Street, Sutphin Boulevard, Queens Boulevard, Metropolitan Avenue, 102nd Street, Elderts Lane, Cypress Hills, Norwood Avenue, Van Siclen Avenue, Alabama Avenue and Eastern Parkway.

About this time the “A” and “B” skip-signs which had been displayed at stations were replaced with “QJ” and “KK” signs.

If memory serves, the KK signage on the R1/9s actually said Ave of the Americas--a TA first.

That’s correct and so did the MM.

I doubt that the markers for the KK to RE/Pky were red/green since those were the markers for the M to/from Metropolitan.

And why would they display white-white for either 168 St or Rockaway Pkwy? Is the point of the marker lights to distinguish between multiple possible destinations?

The post Chrystie Street replacement signs for the R-16's had an "MM" reading.

I missed that one, but the difference there is that the tower at Bway/Myrtle relied on visual observation of the train whereas Tower 1 which controlled the switches at the east (RR south) end of E/Pky couldn’t see the trains and routed trains based in what the M/M punched at the route request box. Another anomaly is that the markers for the Jamaica Lcl and the Jamaica Exp were the same so when the switches at Marcy were west of the station, the Tw/M there had to rely on the train interval sheets to properly route the trains.

That makes sense about the tower not being able to see the train so the white-white for both destinations was not an issue. But savvy riders also knew the lights, and so different colors for different destinations would have helped the riders even if the tower didn't need them. And there certainly were enough color combinations not to have to use the same ones for different terminals.

I remember once at a family Thanksgiving dinner in the '60s my father and uncle were fondly reminiscing about the days when they could tell which Lexington Av express was a "Jerome" train by the lights, and they rattled off the different combinations they remembered.

One thing I noticed about the BMT at least during my memory is that the marker light combinations were not side sensitive so that for example Myrtle/Chambers could be either green/red or red/green, the Sea Beach could be red/white or white.red etc. The IND and IRT on the other hand were side sensitive. The E to/from Hudson Terminal was red/white, the F to/from Bway/Laf was white/red, pre Chrystie the BB to/from 34/6 was yellow/green, the D to/from Stl (lcl in Bx) was green/yellow etc. As I recall, when only one marker was changed, the IRT lcls only varied the cab side marker away from the red while the expresses varied the off side marker.

I've seen a photo or two of an R-32 sporting a green double Moe sign.

Not out of place although the 4 KKs that returned to Met in the AM never displayed them.

There was a proposed J light rail route in Denver that was never implemented, although the SD160s had J signs programmed. I rode on one such train back in November 2006 during an invitation-only preview of the then-new Southeast Corridor that was sporting a J sign.
