Yeah, confirmed by a text message this morning (Saturday 2/9/2019). The set numbers are #3010 to #3019, and will be placed tomorrow (Sunday 2/10/2019). Hmmm, Lefferts or Rockaways? TBD.

Now they have to be careful about which R179 go on the A and the C, like not confusing the M train's R160's on the Queens Blvd line storage or Jamaica Yard (whereever they store them).

I think the computer will show how many cars are on the train, hopefully minimizing confusion.

Otherwise, they should start writing "5 car set" and "4 car set" in magic marker under the car number in the cabs...

First R179 Train on the A - February 10, 2019

Meanwhile, the R-179's are slowly making their presence known on the "C" 8th Avenue-CPW Express/Fulton Local (145th-Euclid). Yesterday (Saturday 2/9/2019), I rode an eight-car set going uptown from West 4th to 42nd-PABT inside car #3184 [not the R-10 museum car that is for sure]. Also, I had just seen today [Sunday 2/10/2019], another new eight-car set at West 4th going uptown, n/#3197-6-5-4=3-2-1-0/n with #3192 [!!!] and #3194 [!!!!].

I had gotten on *S*3019-3018-3017-3016-3015-3014-3013-3012-3011-3010*N* around 12:50 P.M. yesterday at Chambers Street, headed towards Far Rockaway, stayed there the whole time, then was on the Manhattan-bound run to 207th Street, then stayed on it (by which it was headed towards Lefferts Boulevard) up to 42nd Street. That was around 4:30 P.M. I was on the front cars, and the behavior among the younger railfans that was complained about on some threads relating to last holiday's Arnine runs was very much in evidence (including holding up smartphones to the speakers). I myself am a railfan, but I don't make a big deal of it; with me, it's more a case of quietly taking it in, absorbing the atmosphere and scenery, and memorizing how the pre-recorded announcements at each station sound. That plus traveling alone and not as part of a "herd."

IAWTP with that statement, particularly with the last two sentences you had written. I did not ride the R-179 "A" train that historic day yesterday, and I will probably in the near future (I am not in a hurry yet to ride and/or photograph it).

If I do, I too just going to take in the moment, and perhaps be thinking for myself as to how it would be the same feeling, and must have been back then, when the R-10's were introduced brand new (and with the same car numbers to boot) on that very same "A" line some seventy years ago.

Every thing comes in a sense as a circle in life itself. And so it goes...

That was the thing in seeing those JA's making spectacles of themselves: I reckon that no such behavior was in evidence when the R10's made their debut on the A line in 1948-49.

Yes, the R-211's are suppose to go to the "A", and possibly to the "R", replacing the R-46's, plus SIRT replacing the R-44's, and finally the R-32's for good. The R-179's are intended, at this point (subject to change), to replace all the R-42's and some of the R-32's, which may still be needed to provide additional service on any other given lines.

As of now, all 222 R-32's are back stationed at 207th Street and/or Pitkin Yard. All the remaining R-160's on the "C" went back to East New York Yard to continue over on lines based from there. Since the eight-car R-179 units in "C" service is based at 207th/Pitkin at this time, it is possible that MTA NYCT wanted to get the ten-car unit out there from the yard(s) that service and stored them currently.

The A will use both. The A line uses somewhere around 40 trainsets, there will only like 12 sets of 179s on the A so the A line will still be majority 46 until the 211s come.

What is interesting about railfan behavior is that when the first train of new cars is introduced on a line all the railfans wait at a strategic location to ride it. When the line is down to the last train of the older cars about to be scrapped, those same railfans now wait at the same location to ride that one. I’m guilty of that myself so it’s not a criticism, just an observation.

they are like moving tin cans. the interiors have been a disgrace for 30 years now.
i rode two of them w my family on the D Saturday and both were disgraces. the vandals are now scratching their names with several strokes to let it stand out.

It was even more of a sight seeing R-44s show up for the first time on the F train at Queens Plaza with a set of R1-9s across the platform on the GG. After being used to R1-9s under Queens Blvd along with slants & R-42s, the R 44 was a shocking leap into the future with its 75 ft length, chime time door closings & shiny interiors. A similar effect on the clientele was when a set of M-1s pulled into Jamaica Sta for the first time next to a set of MP-54s. Talk about night & day!

Then what to do with R32's to get them out of tunnels ? Sending them out to the Rockaways does not seem sufficient after long hot schlep down Manhattan and across Brooklyn.

I suspect they will junk the R42's by then, now that the L train situation seems settled.

There are still 13 or 14 A-A sets of R46's ?

Put in cab signals and ASC and send 5 pairs to SIR. They could probably deal with them draw-barred in 2 car sets.

The problem isn't tunnels, it's tunnels + all local (minimal air flow, maximum door open time). The R32 was just fine in E service for over a decade after GOH. Putting them in 10 car trains for the A should be sufficient.

So then tell me why, when I was working the E for 2 years right before the 63rd St. Line opened, I would take a train with 10 hot cars to Jamaica Yard (I would walk thru the train from the north end to the south end at Parsons/Archer to make sure no passengers were aboard) and by the time I got into the yard all 10 cars were nice and cool?

That’s also one of the reasons that the GOH R-42s received stainless steel interiors. The problem there was that while the R-68s like the 62s had some sort of “striping” designed into the panels so they wouldn’t look drab, the panels on the R-42s were smooth making that cars resemble a greasy spoon diner.

I ride the Market-Frankford Line on Septa. Depending on the time of the year, passenger load, etc., 5 times out of 10, the car did not feel comfortable to me. Sitting at 69th St. or Frankford Transportation Center with one side of doors open really kills the comfort level and the system can't make it up until several stops ,later.

They hauled ass, even did good on the flats, higher top speed than the SMEEs car on that stretch (49 S/B, 48 N/B) most SMEE's top out at 45 on the flats. Riding the CPW N/B express run is quite fun in a NTT, I know the SMEE's had their field shunting removed which plays a part in them being slower than an NTT.
