Our shop can do wonderful things. We also have several sets of our gauge trucks in storage.

You are correct!!! The guess is carriage builders in Baltimore spaced their wheels 5' 4 1/2 and they made the first horse cars. Once the gauge was established it stayed.

I suspect Newark might have pulled a few field coil tricks. They slightly beat cars on an adjacent road.

I first rode Newark City Subway around 1960 and on my many railfanning trips to Newark on the Hudson Tubes and later PATH, I always managed to take a trip on the City Subway over the years. It was the closest place for me to ride PCCs since Bkln and DC trolleys shut down and I really didn't have the opportunity to go the Philly or Boston. I had ridden Bkln PCCs when I was younger and thanks to my uncle who lived in the DC area, was able to ride DC's PCCs quite a bit including the ERA's fan trips on the last day of operation in 1962.

I was on 6 and a couple of the cars getting put into storage during the day. I got to be on the VIP car by showing up at the right time. The original car that was going to be VIP with all the bunting crapped out (wouldn't take power). I was there part of because of it being the last day, part being a PCC fan, part of knowing the shop guys from training me on PCC maintenance for Brooklyn's sisters to the Newark cars. I got some trinkets to take home :)
