An eight car train running as a BMT #15 Jamaica Local left 168 Street-Jamaica Terminal in Queens at 10:00 AM and consisted of 6404,6407,6402,6400,6409,6403,6401,6408. Source: ERA Headlights Magazine / February 1955 Tuscarora Almanac – January 11, 1958 – The Book of Last Runs Patterson, New Jersey New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad RDC (Rail Diesel Car) operation is discontinued. The four RDC-1’s; M-1 through M-4, were acquired by the Jersey Central and re-numbered in order to 558 through 561. RDC 559 along with sister 557 made the last passenger run on CNJ’s Newark Branch on April 29, 1967. The NYCTA meant the combined order of R-16's (200 for the IND-BMT) and R-17's (400 for the IRT) in that banner. Back in 1948, I seem recall a similar sign about "761 cars", in such the same fashion, when the R-12's were being delivered from A.C.F. as the first ones delivered to the BoT, meaning combining the 761 total from the one rebuilt R-7A [#1575], 400 R-10's, 10 R-11's, 100 R-12's, 150 R-14's, and 100 R-15's.-William A. I guess you were not around in the late 1950's- mid-1960's or you never rode the Jamaica Line. "15" was the BMT route number for this line. The route number was most commonly seen on the R-16 cars. Most of the Broadway-Brooklyn or 14 St-Canarsie lines were Standards, with no numbers posted on them. However, there were a few R-16's put into service as #14 for B'way-Bklyn, or #16 14 St-Canarsie trains. |

I said it tongue in cheek.We moved to New Jersey in 1967 and that was when I became immersed in the subway system. I rode on the R-16s exactly twice, 19 years apart. My first ride on them was on September 23, 1967 on a - you guessed it - 15 across the Williamsburg Bridge from Marcy Ave. to Essex St. That 15 caught me by surprise and I actually did wonder what a 15 was. I caught a glimpse of one of the side route signs and my question was answered. Back then, riding on the BMT standards was cruel and unusual punishment, and I rode them for two years every Saturday on the Lonesome Larry. I'd gotten used to seeing route and destination signs above the storm door and the standards had neither. They looked as though they were from another century. |
