That seems to be the standard for pre-NTT cars, with a few exceptions.

Door width was 3'10" or 46" up through the R38's. The R40's inaugurated the 4'2" or 50" door widths.

Re: Cuomo - Blow up the MTA

If the laws governing the TBTA state that it must set tolls to maintain a certain level of surplus and that a certain amount of that surplus must be given to the agency operating the NYC buses and subways and a certain amount must go to the LIRR and Metro North, then the TBTA (i.e.: its board) has no say on the distribution of those funds. It's up to the legislature and the governor to set the parameters as long as those parameters do not violate the state constitution or the terms of outstanding TBTA bonds (e.g.: requiring payment to the transit agencies before debt service due the bondholders). I don't think there is anything in, for example, public authority law, that would make a single agency necessary for there to be a subsidy.

My recollection of the history of the TBTA and the MTA's creation is that the TBTA was brought under the new MTA both to get the TBTA out from any bond restrictions that would have limited the use of TBTA surpluses from subsidizing transit and for political expediency in getting the TBTA out from under the control of Robert Moses and its board. It could have been done differently. It just looked better to have it all in one agency.

I may stand completely alone on this- but I actually like the MTA Ronan paint scheme. I think it looked great, until the cars were vandalized.

I do agree that it looked dumb on Arnines, and would have looked awful on Steels and Triplexes if those had been kept. But on R10 and up- I love it.

IIRC there were 2 RR in the sign box roll.

One had Broadway underneath, the other had nothing for the trains to Chambers St.

Both are seen here, obviously the train to 95 is displaying the wrong one.

If you'll permit this off topic digression, SCTV did those Great White North skits because the Canadian Government required every Canadian show to have a few minutes of exclusive Canadian content. It must have had an identity crisis!

They can add one more doorway. The wall:door ratio of 5 doorways for 75 feet = 4 doorways for 60 feet, one doorway for every 15 feet. Examples of 6(!) doorway cars exist [with roof-mounted A/C to boot], so it is not structurally impossible.

The B of T did raise fares in 1948 and despite what the press said about one of the recent fare increases being the highest in the history of the NYCTS, the 1948 increase was actually the highest since it was a 100% increase. Except for the demolition of the els, I don’t recall any any postwar service cuts, in fact there were service increases in many areas. The deferred maintenance actually started after the creation of the NYCTA in 1953.

We would have been better off if the MTA had never ordered 75 ft cars in the first place.

At some point some of the post Chrystie had roll signs installed without the route name underneath the letter. The R-9s used in the Eastern lacked them and some of the R-4s and R-6s used on the IND also got signs like that. It could be possible that that particular car might have gotten one since they were interchangeable.

That's true, but those were in the works before WWII and were also delayed by the war. Not to mention that some of those service cuts were beyond the control of the B of T and were due to Robert Moses’ machinations.
