Scranton Transit discontinues service on the Green Ridge Suburban Line. This is the very last streetcar line in the city. Service at the end is provided by six of the Osgood Bradley Master Units.

IRT and IND Divisions

A limited free transfer point is opened 5th Avenue station of the IRT Flushing Line and the 42nd Street station of the IND 6th Avenue Line. Paper transfers are issued from 5 AM to 12 noon from the IND to the IRT. Transfers from the IRT to the IND are issued from 12 noon to 8 PM. A connecting passageway between the two stations is opened on August 31, 1971 eliminating the part time paper transfer.

Why was the free transfer point put into place at this time and why wasn't it added in 1948 like many of the other passageways? Also, why was there a part time transfer?

Why was the free transfer point put into place at this time and why wasn't it added in 1948


The Chrystie Street subway opened in November 1967. Most Brighton and all West End Line trains were re-routed to the 6th Avenue Line in Manhattan. The 6th Avenue Line did not have the connections to the east and west side IRT lines which lead to many complaints. The free transfer that was established at 42nd Street was established as a temporary solution until a permanent passageway could be constructed.

Notice that this was three weeks (and a day) after the opening of the Chrystie St. connection. I think the idea was to provide passengers who wound up on 6th Ave. trains instead of the Broadway line trains they formerly would have taken with an alternate means of getting to Grand Central or Times Square. That would fit the directions of IND to IRT in the morning and the opposite in the afternoon.

For part of the time the paper transfer was in effect, it used not just a printed piece of paper but an electronically encoded strip that got inserted into special turnstiles. I think this was the first instance of subway turnstiles accepting electronically-encoded media of any kind. It was an experiment that only lasted a few months, IIRC. I think some time in 1969 or 1970.

When the transfer passage finally opened, MTA Chairman William Ronan was there to cut the ribbon (on the 6th Ave. end). I was there too, and waited around a bit for him to do it, but I got tired of waiting. I noticed people ducking under the ribbon and using the passage anyway, and I eventually did the same. There was no barrier on the Flushing line end, so people who walked through the passage in the other direction would have had no choice but to duck under the uncut ribbon.

The passageway at 42/6 is quite substantial like the one at JaySt/Metrotech so it wasn’t just a matter of breaking down a wall or removing a gate.
