The were Westinghouse and like the R-29s on the IRT, their controllers were pure murder to hold down. The later cars starting with the R-32s had controllers that were identical in appearance but were much more “motorman friendly” to hold down. |

What the R-30s received was pretty much a mini GOH. The brake systems weren’t changed as they were on the IRT cars and A/C wasn’t added because the MTA felt that it would make the cars too heavy (although I’m sure not as heavy was the D types). |

The D's were heaver as a unit but IIRC the axle weight was distributed differently than the R-30s. Someone posted the tons per axle weight dist. awhile back. Based on that, the D's had less overall stress on elevated lines than an air conditioned R-30 would have. |
