R-179 Casual Observations

Posted by ModelRider on Thu Dec 6 09:51:01 2018

Just got off of a brand new R-179, car # 3156, no ads or floor decals. Here are some thoughts I had while riding.

The inside barcode only lists the car number and not car type. The propulsion sound is way different. Gone is the ‘West Side Story’ sing song of the R142-160. Now it’s the song of the screeching banshees.

Grab bars by the ’B’ side end doors are a convenience I didn’t know I needed. Getting pushed towards the back corner is no longer an struggle of finding a place to hold on to, since the overhead bars still curve to the ceiling. Also, there seems to be a lot more space on the anti-climbers between cars. You can fit two grown men out there easily.

The LED lights in the FIND and top sign are super bright, almost to the point of burning into my retinas if I stare at them too long. And speaking of lighting, the fluorescence interior lights are jittery. They dim and flicker for milliseconds at a time. Many may not notice, but after 45 minutes it was starting to drive me mad.

I’m sure the on board electronics are more advanced, but the car feels and looks cheaper. The car body welds points outside are really noticeable and the inside brackets and lights look like they were purchased at your local corner hardware store.

All in all, exactly what I expected from Bombardier.

Unfortunately, they have become the Kmart of a subway builder.

I believe that the interior car body lights are LED and not fluorescent.

If you think it's bad from the passenger perspective, just think how bad it is from the employee perspective.

For one thing, any employee who is slightly more portly than skinny will have a hard time or an impossible time getting in between cars to the roadbed/putting up/taking down barrier springs in case of a BIE or other emergency.

I think the 179s are good cars, takeoff smoothly, ride smoothly (Even more smoothly than the 143/160 IMO).

The LED sign is brighter than other NTT, I can tell when a 179 is coming long before gets close cause of the super bright LED light. That, and a little green light inside the cab that's visable above the T/O seat that's visible on the 143/160.

NOT visable on the 143/160.

Have no idea why they made the space between cars so tight. I'm not heavy set by any means it's hard for me to climb between those cars without ripping my vest.
Personal operating observations don't understand why they switched the speedometer and the air guage. Now with the speedometer so high up have to take your eyes off the road to see your speed. Also not a fan of the curved throttle handle but that's just my opinion.

The propulsion sound is way different.

Do they sound similar one of the car fleet on WMATA ?

Almost certainly LED. That seems to be the way of the future.

I had my first, and I believe so far only, ride on the R179 about a year ago - it was #3058. Needed Chanukah candles from a guy on the LES.

I also thought the FIND lights and the screen next to it were super bright. But that may be just because they're new. LEDs do lose brightness as they age- but since its gradual, we tend not to notice t until they're REALLY dim. I wouldn't be surprised if the R160s were just as bright 10 years ago, but we're only noticing the dimming once the new R179s came on.

Does anyone out there have the specs for the luminosity or any other tech info about this?

I did qualify on the R160, operated a few stops in school car along the G line. Picked lines which didn't run them, switched at 168 before the C line got them. I was not impressed, I was able to avoid them all the way till retirement.
