VIDEO: R33WF Transfer Action

Posted by Dj Hammers on Wed Dec 5 16:37:29 2018

Caught this last night. Note the very unusual consist - 7 R33WFs, a signal dolly, and two R134 type cars. Enjoy!

Not so hard to believe, they once looked like this.

The bodies of these cars sure look rough.

I'm surprised the signs aren't set to 7/World's Fair - World's Fair.:)

This livery scheme was the best! After the graffitee epidemic dissipated, the entire R33WF fleet should have been restored to its original appearance

Not a single dead motor light, at least they're in good mechanical shape... or the lights' burned out :).

They looked so beautiful. I'm glad I got the chance to ride them when you could smell the brand new smell. Thanks for the photo.

The date on that slide is September 1963. It either could have been the one of the first R-33's to arrive or it was used in a special train commemorating their arrival.

Agreed. Thought as part of their conversion to work cars they would've gotten some body repair and a new paint job into MoW Yellow, not the half-assed job of just painting SOME of the ends.

They didn't even bother to renumber some of them like they used to do in previous revenue-to-work car conversions.

Given how badly the bodies look in a lot of the examples seen here, I wouldn't be surprised.

9337 went straight from passenger service to garbage train service. Absolutely no conversions. The ads and map are still in place inside. The last time I saw her she still had her side roll-signs, but those look gone now.

Nice video- thanks for shooting and sharing it.

do you or anyone else on here know why the cars are being transferred? final scrapping? Some/most of them look to be in very rough shape.

I agree. When it was applied to the R-10s, I was hoping the entire NYCTA painted fleet would be painted like that but it never happened. The only question I had about that scheme as applied to the R-10s is why they painted the stripes in the ends of the cars instead of just painting them the solid turquoise like the R-33s and the #1 ends of the R-36s.

Isn't there a photo in one of your calendars of a solid R-33 singles train just after delivery?

Thanks!

The paint is fading, albeit slowly, on the Redbirds.

The signal dolly cars (S01 and S02) were both built by Fuji Heavy Industries in 1984.

The cars on the signal dolly consist were just used as horses to move some other R134s and R33WFs back from E180 Yard to 207 Yard. Nothing is being scrapped. The cars may look rough, but they are functional and still perform quite well.
