I've noticed something...

Does CTA use a 3rd rail with NO cover on it???

Thanks for the link. I forget some browsers don't automatically recognize the string as an address and automatically link.

Isn't that bad when it rains or snows?? Creating arcs? I swore I saw a lot of arcing when I was there 6 years ago and it was downpouring.

I believe that CTA cars have a snow scraper that can be fitted to the truck just forward of the 3rd rail shoes that clears the ice and snow from the 3rd rail. The cars also have snowplows on the lead trucks.

They arc, but CTA cars have a gravity shoe, similar to our old el cars. Although the now-retired 2200's had a miniature Pioneer truck with NY style 3rd rail paddles.

The amazing thing for oldtimers like me is seeing how many buildings are missing from when I rode "nose to window" or in the railfan seat age 11 or so. And, of course, the missing 3rd and 4th tracks N of Chicago Ave as well as eliminated stations.

Real time, my ass! Look how fast the passengers are moving when the train is standing in a station. This has been significantly sped up - at least in selected places. I guess the trip is longer than this suggests.

Can you give an example of where this happens? I noticed the train is pulling into Jackson station near the 23-minute mark, Monroe at ~24, and Lake at ~25. Nothing looks odd about the passengers' movements on the platform at those points in the video.

Many of the station dwells are on fast-forward. The whole youtube video, Dan Ryan to Howard, is an hour long and that actual red line trip is more like an hour six minutes.

Also for the first half, the trees don't have many leaves (early spring?) but after the underground section all the trees have a lot of leaves (summer?). I'm guessing they spliced in one of the downtown transfer stations where they put up a long transfer list.

That's what I suspected. I'm fine with speeding up the station dwells, as my interest level flags when the train is stopped and no new 'scenery' is being revealed. But then they shouldn't bill this as a real time video, although I admit it's not the worst sort of misrepresentation in the world today.

When they offer "transfers" to other lines, it would be nice if the video of the line transferred to would begin at the station where you "transferred" instead of at the beginning of the line. Maybe YouTube doesn't support that. It's still very nice to have these. I was in the Chicago area just once, in 1995, and was surprised to see the trains running in highway medians.

The idea of rail in highway mefians was started in NY..But never materialised.
Several of our now existing roads were planned WITH AND FOR RAPID TRANSIT LINES..that were removed from the process by our anti transit mogol.

Chicago pioneered median 'subways' which allowed sloshing of highway funds to build the route. That said, stations in freeway medians such as BART's Rockridge in North Oakland, are distinctly unpleasant places to wait for trains. They are noisy, the cars spew exhaust.

The WMATA ones are pretty good. I wait at the Wheile Reston station and it's more pleasant than many NYC el stations. The key is the wide platform, wind protected seating areas and the large mezzanine above the platform.

I've also waited at CTA's Blue line median ones and yeah, those suck. The problem there is the platform is too narrow which means the cars are that much closer.

BART platforms are plenty wide, but at Rockridge the highway is closer than even some parts of the Congress exopressway are to the Blue.

Ah... I noticed another thing about WMATA's, they have a buffer wall between the roadways and tracks within much of the station. Out of sight-out of mind, I guess (I do know it is not a sound wall as I can hear the cars quite clearly).

Very interesting, thanks for sharing this! I've never been to Chicago, so this is the first real exposure I've had to the "L" system. I'm glad that this was taken a few years ago, because apparently, Wilson station has been redone, so all traces of stubs and old platforms have been removed.
