W.B.'s Rail Almanac for November 12th

Posted by W.B. on Mon Nov 12 04:02:00 2018

November 12, 1935 - The Book of First and Last Runs

Manhattan, New York
Eighth and Ninth Avenues Railway Company
Eighth Avenue Coach Corporation

Buses replace streetcars on the Eighth Avenue-Central Park West and Ninth and Amsterdam Avenues lines. The aforementioned trolleys had been run by the Eighth and Ninth Avenues Railway which, in its last months, had been owned by New York Railways. Horse-drawn streetcars had first run along Eighth Avenue in 1855, and Ninth Avenue in 1859. The replacement bus service will be provided by the Eighth Avenue Coach Corporation as Route Nos. 10 and 11, respectively.

As part of this bustitution, Central Park West throughout its entire stretch between 59th and 110th Streets is converted to two-way traffic. It had previously run one-way southbound.

Intersting. I never knew that CPW was ever one way.

Not only that, but it was widened when the Eighth Avenue subway was being built.

It was widened when the streetcar tracks were removed, with the street widened onto the former streetcar ROW. It was not actually widened.

Ah. Must've read it wrong, or it was badly written.

But I did see a pic of SB traffic along CPW when the streetcars still ruled along Columbus Circle.

CPW was in-fact one way prior to the widening.

It’s ironic that it was actually the first one way avenue, and is presently two way where most avenues have become one way.

Is this what you think you saw?

Columbus Circle 1912. Just above the Circle is one of President TRUMP's Properties, One Central Park West!!

A later Post Card, showing trolleys around Columbus Circlw.

Too early. The pic I saw was one taken around the 1920's or early '30's, in a book of lost NYC streetcars.
