Gantlet track for freight trains to avoid sideswiping the platforms.

Great pix.

You're correct. That was my last SMART photo; I forgot that my photos at the south terminal weren't good enough to upload.

I'm guessing this is 4 1/2 ft rather than BART gauge? Hard to tell in the photo.

Nice shots Bob.

Would a commuter version of this train set be suitable for the LIRR ?

this IS a commuter train--just much nicer than LIRR. There were supposed to be mid train cabless cars. The builder, Nippon Sharyu, has decamped from the US.

Though I just read that SMART is ordering some new sets - don't know who's building them.

I just wish the third rail clearance issue could be addressed so LIRR could use on scoots and shuttles.

Very nice.
Across the Bay(Golden Gate side) commuter transportation?

Great..now all we need is a way to get those trains across the bay.
Pipe dreams...

Yeah, north of Golden Gate - Sonoma and Marin Counties. Hence, SMART - Sonoma Marin Area Rapid Transit. It connects to ferries that cross the Bay.

actually, at present no ferry connection. The current south terminal is across the street from the SanRafael bus station complex. The extension to the Larkspur frerry is being built.
And, then, there is the question of either tracks to Richmond/El Cerrito or across the GG Bridge. In the latter case, BART originally wanted to buildd a 'lower deck' rail crossing. Marin County folks were apoplectic and found a consultant who wrote a report claiming the bridge wasn't strong enough. However, a history of the GG Bridge explicitly states it was engineered to carry NWP (former SP subsidiary) heavyweights. Doing the math on how much lighter BART's current fleet is, I claim they could use the bridge easily. I am not likely to live long enough to see this happen, but I certainly believe it should, much as I want tracks over the Verrazano.

Problem - SMART is standard gauge, BART is not. Thus no direct connection is possible.

As a first revenue day rider of BART and SMART, I am aware of those issues. However, BART has recently inaugurated "eBart" which is also a standard guage DMU operation extending from their Pittsburg (no h) station further east to Antioch with cross platform transfer where the guage and equipment change. So, if the standard guage SMART route were extended to Richmond it would be a transfer point to both BART and the Capitol Corridor/San Joaquins/Amtrak.
As to the GG Bridge, my version is BART from San Rafael, across the bridge with routes splitting at Geary and 19th Ave. Geary route to downtown and under the bay in the second tube (being talked about though no explicit route, timing yet) and the 19th Ave tunnel down to link up with the existing route to continue via Daly City to SFO and Millbrae. This affords Marinites and the west side of SF direct rapid transit to the airport or commuting to Silicon Valley jobs without wasting time heading downtown first.
Why BART you ask, rather than Muni? Muni has punted building a line out Geary for 40 years; time for someone else to get it done, and we badly need a second tube.
