[PHOTOS] What's Left Of Sanita Hills

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu Nov 1 20:21:54 2018

I was told some sixty ex-Manhattan el cars were sent up to Holmes, NY that became Sanita Hills. A summer getaway for NYC Dept of Sanitation employees and their families.
About 1957, Sanita Hills was acquired by the Boy Scouts of America and became Camp Sanita. Just about all of the abandoned cars were bull dozed and the land cleared for development.

Judging by the serious deterioration of this car, this specimen may never have been used as part of the Boy Scout camp.
The Boy Scouts had conventional cabins as well as the "el" cars. Not all of the cars were used. This is as far as I stepped into the car. The floor was spongy and dangerous.

image host

This end was the entrance to the car and served as a mini porch.
image host

Broad side view of a car of which it's original number is unknown. Nature is claiming the car as one of its own.
image host

The opposite end. A car that was once coupled to her sisters and roamed the mighty Manhattan "els" of 2nd, 3rd, 6th, & 9th Aves rests in peace.
Just think of how many thousands of people who stood on that platform throughout many decades.

image host

The rusty anti-climber
image host

The ceiling of the end platform. Notice the two holes in the ceiling that supported the vertical poles that supported the gates.
image host

The underside of the car by the end platform. Looks like the original draw bar

The simple cinder block foundation that dates back to 1941 or 42. That's when the cars were sent up there.
I was contacted by a someone local to the area and invited me to photograph this spectacle. The location and contact will remain anonymous.

Excellent photos!
The cars look beyond any hope of restoration, but maybe letting nature reclaim them isn't so bad.

Thanks Dave.

If this car was last occupied in the mid 50's, I would say you're looking at about 60 years of slow deterioration.

Thanks Catfish.

You may or may not see it in the first photo, but the car body is sagging because the stabilizing bar on the other side that tightly kept the body straight has rotted away. When the other goes, then she'll cave in to a pile of debris.

Sad :-(

I went there many times in the early 1960's (Troop 327 Ridgewood Queens). Once, in 1962, the cabin I was in caught fire from a faulty heater and it burned to the ground. No one was hurt.

There were 86 Manhattan el gate cars shipped to Camp Sanitas. All but 18 of them were built before the IRT leased the MER in April, 1904. These 18 gate cars had not been rebuilt into MUDC vestibule cars.

The cars were rebuilt into two different configurations as I understand it. Some where re-built as barracks for the scouts and other were set up as cottages for families to use.

I was comparing your list of Sanita cars with mine which was compiled by the E.R.A. dated December 31, 1955 and found the following car number missing from your list:

139 - 175 - 1323 - 1325 & 1404

Is your list the same or compiled elsewhere ?

You are right, Bill about 139, 175, and 1404. Your 1323 should read 1322, instead. So, there were 90 cars, all totaled, that went to Camp Sanitas.
