I wonder if the train will be relayed at 145th Street lower level between runs, provided that there are no G.O's. in effect on the Concourse route.

I agree. Either 168 St should be used or else the train should run in service to 145 St lower where it can be turned without interfering with the mainline. At 125 St the train would have to Xover one or the other of the express tracks depending on whether A5 or A6 is used.

Maybe they just decided to try something new. Didn’t run up the SAS last year?

I still remember the first time they ran them in passenger service like this, the thing ran express all the way to Forest Hills via the 63rd street line.

Last year was the first year there was an SAS to run them up. That change made a certain degree of sense, since it kept them relatively confined to the busy midtown corridor (at least as well as running to Queens Plaza would) while allowing the convenience of terminating at an actual terminal, without having to fumigate on the main line at Queens Plaza.

I disagree.

The longer you make this trip, the less trips you will have.

The whole point of this is for the holiday shoppers in the midtown area and not rail fans who want the special to accrue more mileage than necessary.

Probably not, because NYCT and the TM want to focus on the train being as much as possible in midtown Manhattan to get those shoppers noticing and riding the train up and down the line. If they are delays with the other regular service equipment and track conditions along the WB-based routes, there could be a logistic and public relations nightmare that no one want to encounter with.

And so it goes...

I'm not sure what the condition of those last R10s in service were. I know they had a partial GOH but I doubt that remedied all of their problems.

Upon looking at the car on the "Parade of Trains" this past June 2018, ex-GOH'd museum unit #3184 currently has a different sounding air compressor (neither its original WABCO 3YC A-1 type or the NYAB rotary screw compressor), and was riding on a pair of R-32 type trucks.

The braking system is handled a bit differently now, which leaves me to believe it does not have the composition brake shoes that caused plenty of flat wheels on the GOH'd fleet. #3184 runs OK now, but it is missing its two A.C.F. builders' plates as I have noticed that would make the car a bit more complete.

Going n/b, there's that lone timer just before 125th. Then there's that stupid timer at 81st s/b that has expresses plodding the rest of the way to 59th. You'd make better time on a local.

The R10 occasionally MU'd with the R16 on the J and possibly on the 14, and 15 lines in the 1950's. I wonder how the R16 liked being tugged along faster than its comfort level.

Couldn't get the AB set or a Triplex to tag along with 6 Arnines?

Standards would make it 9 cars + 21'.
A Triplex would be like 2 Standards, or 14' longer than an 8 car Arnine.

It varied. Sometimes there were trains with 8 R-16 and 2 R010s at the end and sometimes it was the other way around. I recall circa 1959 seeing an A train of R-10s with the 9th car of the 10 car train an R-16.

What I recall, on the n/b CPW express back in the day, there were some timers starting around 86th street. Many train ops took it slow down that 103rd street incline until they could at least see the signals up the track at about 110th. Today even an R68 makes that a joy to ride. There was no stupid timer 'tween 116th & 125th.

That was the best part of an R10 run up CPW back then. They'd hit speed by 72nd already, and shoot thru 81st. Windows open in summer, the external noise and the arcing of the contact show made it a showstopper.
We'd ride back & forth 'tween 125th & 59th for hours just because...

Must have been the rail & trackbed that caused incredible sidesway which we don't get too much of today. Even the R 1-9's gave a performance, with those hand brakes at the car end clanging back & forth.
