How far does the 3rd rail go on the Central Branch past the Hempstead Branch cutoff?

Posted by Jeff Rosen on Wed Nov 7 22:18:02 2018

Me and my son Eric were going through the Franklin Av crossing East of the Garden City Station when we saw the lights of a train a ways east on the Central Branch, way past where the Hempstead train turns towards Country Life Press. Thinking it must be a work train or a freight we went to the parking lot east of there which has a little used crossing with gates and waited for the train. To our surprise it was an electric train of M-7's. What was that train there for? Some sort of move? How far does the third rail go? The next crossing (with no gates) is Washington Avenue and there is no third rail there.

The third rail ends about 100 feet west of Washington Av:

Thanks. We went to Washington Av but it was too dark to see down the track. We were very surprised to see an electric train there. I sometimes see a diesel work train on the Central Branch.

What a tragedy that line was abandoned. That line would have been the much needed, "third mainline track" Fourth actually!

Possibly some issue that forced a Hempstead train to terminate at Garden City and so they do that move to turn it back west.

agreed. for one thing with service to babylon hempstead village would be in much better shape. although there probably be a denser level of development along the hempstead turnpike corridor.

Occasionally a train will be hidden there as a protect for Belmont Service or a special event in that area. Given the time of the video that may not have been the case, the other explanation would be PTC testing which the LIRR promised the FRA would be finished December of 2018. So some unusual moves like C3s and Dual Modes on this branch and others have been happening since PTC has to be proven on all places on all equipment not restricted.
