X7592

Posted by K. Trout on Thu Oct 11 23:07:39 2018

I stumbled across this photo on nycsubway.org. It shows R-22 7592 with an X in what appears to be masking tape before the number board. Did that signify anything? The photo is dated 1/25/63, was there something going on at that time?

It marks the spot?

The "X" indicates that the car was operating as a trailer. Forty cars from groups R-17-R-28 were so treated.

I do not know the reason why this was done and it was not permanent.

I'd assume to save costs.

Who'd a thunk it.

I wasn’t aware of any SMEEs being made into trailers but I do know that about that time a small group of R-1/9s were temporarily trailerized.

I don't think so. Perhaps there was a shortage of available replacement motors when one or two of their motors failed.

The R-1's had the same problem and ran as trailers for a while until they caught up.

We always had trailer cars, still do today: Called a "dead motor".

LOL! And when you have a bunch, you have a slow train!

I haven't heard of that either. They would never get away with trailers (non motorized) on the Flushing Line. I remember being on an all motorized 11 car train of R-62a s with a rush hr load creeping into Vernon-Jackson after climbing the Steinway hill. You could feel the heat from the resistors amidship.

One of my all time favorites, the R-110B's were three car sets with the center car cabless and motor less by design.

The others were the R-1/9's converted to work motors, with 4 motors.

Guaranteed the train had some dead motors (cars not taking power).
