What was the problem(s) with the Q-Types running on the Franklin Avenue Shuttle?

This was a test run. I believe that they had trouble climbing the grade. Others here may know more about it. Also they had just returned from the IRT. I don't believe that the door sill extensions had been installed at that time.

I hadn’t realized that the Qs were on Fkln that early. I had always assumed that they went there sometime after they had already been in service for some time on Myrtle. Considering that Myrtle also had some serious up grades going towards Wyckoff Av I wonder why they didn’t seem to have that problem over there.

Randy: As I understand it they ran on the 3rd Avenue El until December 1956. The steel door still extensions were not installed until 1958. The platform gap may have been a contributing factor.

Well, after the Qs were removed from 3 Av, they were transferred to CIY for a relatively expensive overhaul which included complete interior and exterior painting and moving the tripcocks from the IRT side to the BMT side. I Imagine that the door sill extensions would have been installed about the same time as they were sent to the BMT since it was anticipated that they would be used on lines that fit 10 ft wide cars whether it was Fkln or Myrtle.

After 1958, they needed those extensions for trains, between Broadway and Metropolitan Ave. Too bad the "C" cars had been scrapped by then. They could have been used on the Franklin Shuttle.
