Penn Station Passageway

Posted by northshore on Mon Oct 8 12:02:40 2018

The "gimbel's passageway" should be called the "Penn Station Passageway" because it connected the 34 St BMT/IND/H&M Station on 6 Av with Penn Station (LIRR level) on 7 Av.

No.

The passageway was OWNED by Gimbles, and it was on their property, not public property. It was built in the vault space under the portion of sidewalk owned by the building.

Ergo: It is the Gimbles passageway.

Was called Gimbel's Passageway because it provided direct access to Gimbel's basement level. It was beneath 32nd St., so the north side of the passageway's eastern half abutted Gimbel's. Today Gimbel's building is the Manhattan Mall.

Would be nice to have it restored, but there are the inevitable legal and security questions that would have to be answered.

If it ever reopens, it will be granted naming rights from some private firm.

Which have been addressed for various other private passageways, such as the one that connects 49th and 7th Ave with 49th and 6th Ave.

BART has been employing 'ambassadors' in the street to fare control mezzanine elevators in SF as a way of preventing them from being used as either bathrooms or shooting galleries.

It is OWNED by whoever now owns the Gimbel's property.
It gets their name unless they want to sell naming rights.

It is a PRIVATE tunnel; on PRIVATE property.

If it's like the nice modern passageway from 49/7 to 49/6, it doesn't get any name at all. That's not called the "Barclay's passageway;" it's just called something like "Passageway to 6th Ave."

It did not provide access to Gimbels. It provided access to Penn Station. Gimbels had there own subway access on the mezzanine level of the IND . It is still there and serves as the subway entrance to Manhattan Mall

My understanding is it was closed due to the realities of early 1990s NYC. Nowadays, I would think any such passageway would have a healthy NYPD presence should the need present itself.

If every subway station with long winding corridors were shut over similar concerns most of the major transfer points of our fair system would be closed. No TSQ, No Broadway Junction, No Court Sq, No Fulton St, so on and so forth.

I use the 49th Street passageway from 7th to 6th from time to time, and I've never seen any law enforcement presence, nor any disreputable activity.

Not really, though it is attached to the Rockefeller Center passageways on the east end. It is 70 years more recent.

Sorry, but not true. The Manhattan Mall entrance is a vestige of Gimbel's but the passageway also provided access to the Gimbel's basement level as well, west of the current Manhattan Mall access. In fact, I distinctly remember wall signs where the IRT 7th Ave. uptown local platform is still located that said "Broadway Subway - Hudson Tunnels - Gimbel Brothers Store."

Even smaller passageways have been closed. For example, the Lexington Ave line's 28th Street station used to have an underpass connecting the two platforms. It was closed in the early 90s after someone was raped down there. I think it remains sealed to this day.

The Astor Place subway station on the eastside of Manhattan, and the #1 platforms of the 59th Street-Columbus Circle station had similar passageways connecting the uptown and downtown platforms. Now at the 59th Street-Columbus Circle subway station the middle platform of the "former IND" station is for the purpose of connecting the two platforms of the #1 station.

The Gimbels tunnel was PRIVATE PROPERTY and could not be patrolled by the NYPD.

Gimbels would have to provide its own security force.

Toward the end of Gimbles that was far out of their reach.

The Penn Station/Gimbels Passageway I believe was closed by 1981 because of security concerns. A lot of work likely needs to be done to re-open that.

And likely will never again unless there is political pressure to re-open it.

As I remember, that was closed due to crime around 1982 or so.

It is a private tunnel on private property.
Gimbel's closed and so did the tunnel. Crime was high because Gimbel's could no longer afford to keep a guard down there.

MTA cannot open it because it does not belong to the .

Vorando (?) maybe owns it but what incentive do they have to open, clean and guard that tunnel. NONE at the moment.

An underground mall? An underground extension of the transit mooseeum?

You want it open you rent the space form Vorando and you can open it, keep it clean, and provide 24/7 security.

They might get an incentive as part of some Hotel Pennsylvania redevelopment plan. Various subway improvements, including the 49th Street passageway from 7th to 6th, 6th Ave from 40th to 39th, and the escalators at the northeast corner of 14th Street and Union Square East, owe their existence to development incentives.
