The PRR was in dire financial straits by the 1950;s and the LIRR was a further financial strain. It wanted to abandon north fork and south fork service entirely, but was not permitted by law. It tried Budd RDC;s as a less costly way ro operate the service off peak. |

N-S USA indeed did shut down. They could start back up, or ship cars from overseas. They still own the design.I wonder if the same design might pop up over in Japan or Australia. the majority of the platforms in both countries is high platform, whether the trackage is electrified or not. |

Here is an interesting item:Sumitomo DMU for Toronto’s Union-Pearson Express (Photo: Stephen C Host). CANADA: The first two of 18 diesel multiple-unit cars being supplied by Sumitomo for Toronto’s Union-Pearson Express airport rail link has been delivered to regional transport agency Metrolinx. The US$75m order placed in 2011 covers 12 Type A driving cars and six Type B intermediate cars with toilets, which will enable the operation of a mix of two-car and three-car units. Similar to 18 DMU cars ordered by Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit Authority in the USA, they will offer level boarding, wheelchair places and extensive luggage space. They are being are being built at Nagoya in Japan, with final fitting out taking place at Nippon Sharyo’s plant in Rochelle, Illinois. The DMUs will comply with EPA Tier 4 emissions standards, and are designed for easy conversion into EMUs if the proposed electrification of the airport line goes ahead. UP Express is scheduled to launch next year, using 22 km of upgraded route from Union station and a new 3 km elevated spur into the airport. Services will run every 15 min, with a 25 min journey time. The UP Express project was described in detail in the June 2014 issue of railway Gazette International, which magazine subscribers can access in the digital archive.
