gimbels passageway |
|
Posted by rbseabeach on Wed Oct 3 10:49:14 2018 A few years back Vornado was granted a zoning change to build a new building on West 32nd & 7th, as part of the deal, they were supposed to renovate and re open the Gimbels passageway.AFAIK, they received the variance but never built the building, I read today that they have submitted plans for a new building, I did not read anything about the passageway. Does anyone have any updated info on this passageway. today it is even more important then it was back in the 70's. |

The submissions were to an investors meeting, nothing is final since they don't have signed anchor tenants yet. This proposal is 300 feet shorter, not sure what would be required for approval. Things that improve the transit flow in an area might add enough value to the building to be desirable for the developer, regardless. |

I used this passageway during the late 1960's and it was so convenient. When I worked in NYC for awhile during the early to mid 90s, and I took a sixth ave. train downtown, I'd have to walk upstairs, along the street for a block to get to Penn. sta. Inconvenient - especially when it was raining or snowy. |

At least a couple of people on the Queens Board years back, said Mays was a good place to buy 45's and albums. The Korvettes that my family shopped at in Huntington-Melville, also had a good record section - remember seeing Phil Spector's 45's in the record slots. And they had a whole wall of classical, bins for browsing and deep catalog on shelves just above them. - not transit related..... sorry |

With the Gimbel's passageway, the connection is there already. Think of the convenience with access to PATH, Amtrack, NJ transit, and the subwaY LINES, A B C D E F M N Q R W 1 2 3. |
