gimbels passageway

Posted by rbseabeach on Wed Oct 3 10:49:14 2018

A few years back Vornado was granted a zoning change to build a new building on West 32nd & 7th, as part of the deal, they were supposed to renovate and re open the Gimbels passageway.
AFAIK, they received the variance but never built the building, I read today that they have submitted plans for a new building, I did not read anything about the passageway.
Does anyone have any updated info on this passageway.
today it is even more important then it was back in the 70's.

The submissions were to an investors meeting, nothing is final since they don't have signed anchor tenants yet. This proposal is 300 feet shorter, not sure what would be required for approval. Things that improve the transit flow in an area might add enough value to the building to be desirable for the developer, regardless.

Wasn't it spelled Gimbel's? Not Gimbles.

Nobody under 35 is going to remember these names either.

EJ Korvettes
Gertz
Abraham & Straus
Ohrbach's
Wainrite
McCrory's

And so on.

I used this passageway during the late 1960's and it was so convenient. When I worked in NYC for awhile during the early to mid 90s, and I took a sixth ave. train downtown, I'd have to walk upstairs, along the street for a block to get to Penn. sta. Inconvenient - especially when it was raining or snowy.

I know these two:
Abraham & Straus
F.W. Woolworth's

Manhattan Mall was once A&S Plaza.
Queens Center (or was it what is now known as Queens Place?) used to have A&S.

I think I remember when the Forest Hills Woolworth's became Boston Market Chicken. I wonder if Boston Chicken was the first fast-casual restaurant, before they invented the term.

I don't remember any smell. Maybe in later years just before its closure? If you did use it around the same time I did, then either I had a stuffy nose any time I used it :-) , or I just don't remember.

At least a couple of people on the Queens Board years back, said Mays was a good place to buy 45's and albums.

The Korvettes that my family shopped at in Huntington-Melville, also had a good record section - remember seeing Phil Spector's 45's in the record slots. And they had a whole wall of classical, bins for browsing and deep catalog on shelves just above them.

- not transit related..... sorry

Sam Goody's
Record Hunter
Dayton's - on eight street between 6th & 7th.

And although this is "specialty" and not a household name like the others:
The "Underground Uplift Unlimited" - about midway along the south side of St. Mark's Place during the late 60s. Great English import selection. You took two or three steps down from the sidewalk. It's now a restaurant.

Gimbels is by far the best known of the defunct department stores. If there’s any store from Mitch’s list that would be known it would be Gimbels.

This is entirely because of Miracle on 34th Street.

I know of E.J. Korvette’s because of Snopes. I never heard of the others.

Ha. I first heard the claim that they were 8 Jewish Korea Veterans in 1969. Them being founded in 1948 is a nice simple way to debunk that.

Arthur Treacher's was bought out by Nathan's (as was Kenny Rogers Roasters) in the late 90's.

today with the construction of the Dey street passageway, they essentially linked Fulton Transit Center w WTC.
Clearly there was a concern to improve connections and allow for better travel during adverse weather conditions and to reduce the crowd capacity above ground.

With the Gimbel's passageway, the connection is there already. Think of the convenience with access to PATH, Amtrack, NJ transit, and the subwaY LINES, A B C D E F M N Q R W 1 2 3.
