Why Was the Passage to 8th Avenue at the West Side IRT 14th Street Station Closed?

Posted by Mitch45 on Thu Sep 13 11:37:00 2018

Always wonder about this. Was it a crime problem? Seems like a pretty handy connection to have.

Not really needed. Free transfer exists to the 6th Ave. IND and BMT Canarsie.

Was it ever open?

Also, it's not visible on the 8th Ave side. So it probably terminates on that side in work areas that would not ever normally be open to the public.

I don't recall it ever being open to the public back to the late 1960's.

I noticed it for the 1st time last weekend. It was lit up. Gated off. Maybe subways employees use it, or they'd put up a concrete wall with a steel door. .

It's visible, but not accessible:
When going from the ACE to the L, there's a ramp and a staircase.

To see the old passage, stand at the top of the ramp, with your back to the ACE mezzanine. There's a half-height wall between the ramp and the staircase. Follow the line of this wall down the ramp, past where the stairs turn around. Looking up, you should be able to see into the old passage.
From this standpoint, it appears like the passage connected to the mezz where the staircase now is, but was cut short and walled off.

Or maybe - a cinderblock wall?

Bob: I don't know when it was closed but is was open at one time. I believe it was closed due to crime issues. Many of the long IND passageways were closed in the 80's.

It was open at least in the 70s. I know I made one pass through it.

It most definitely was open between 1973 and 1979. I used it often. I lived at 19th & 8th, then 23rd & 10th. It was especially useful in winter.

Circa-1991 news articles mentioned several subway passageways/entrances closing in the wake of a sexual assault on the IND 35th-40th St. passageway, which forever sealed the fate for that tunnel. Perhaps this was one of them?
