Thanks, Chuck. My son is in Pittsburgh. He lives near the zoo. Use to spend time down at at Station Square. Glad I'm not there today.

GVW on the 53' cans is 67,200 lbs, but they are likely to be something well less the that. 100 ton truck crane could make quick work of that. The empty well cars weigh less then GVW of the cans.

Anyway you slice it, service on the T will be truncated at South Hills Junction for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for the information,Sand Box John. I'm hoping the "T" tracks were not damaged, I think the overhead "T" catenary took a hit..

I'm guessing 8-12 weeks to fix everything????

I live 15mi NW of Pittsburgh. Very heavy freight rail traffic is the norm in this area. Nearby Conway Yd is a huge classification yd on the east bank of the Ohio river. Literally dozens of trains are dispatched (on average) daily. Many trains are unit trains consisting of the same commodity.
Point is in addition to unit coal trains, there are several trains of up to 100 cars of crude oil.
If the train that derailed was an oil train, with resulting spill & fire, the results would be nothing short of catastrophic.
Bad as it is screwing up T service & area traffic, we count our blessings. It could have been far worse.

Route 52...was daily service suspended, and this route is only used for emergency detour?

Yes, as far as I recall, no Route 52 streetcar service since ?? We used that routing on a charter in the early 1990's. It was great ride, climbing those hills.

I should have said via Allentown, not 52-Allentown.

They still got off very lucky. Had it happened 2 minutes prior, a revenue LRV train would have been pulverized.
