Avid: Thanks again for the pictures. Notice the 'Civil Defense" emblem on the cars.

Yes, I'm curious just what Part they would play during an emergency?

They assumption was that transport vehicles could be mobilized for emergency evacuations in case of a nuclear attack or a natural disaster. There were fifty or so Civil Defense Fire trucks built for the FDNY as well. Some of the older guys might remember seeing them.

I rode on the IRT (and, for that matter, a Fred) for the first time on this date in 1967. We were headed from Rockefeller Center to the Bronx Zoo and took a Fred first, to Lexington Ave. Of course, back then there was no free transfer, so we walked to 51st and took a 6 to Grand Central, where we changed to a n/b 5. IINM the R-11/22s didn't run on the Lex that much, yet I vividly remember the side doors of the car we were on having no weatherstripping. An R-17, perhaps? Anyway, that train was MOVING! We ripped past 103rd, 110th and 116th in short order. Adter spending several hours at the zoo, it was back to PABT on a 2.

NYC Board of Transportation purchased 400 Mack C-50 diesel buses in 1950-51 with unique specifications to permit these vehicles to be converted into emergency ambulances. For example, both doors were double width and hooks along the windows were designed so that stretchers could be carried. But none of these buses were ever used to respond to a major disaster.

No "weather stripping" was pretty common. The rubber was soft and the vandals would ciut it with a knife.

Of course w/o gave a better chance of injuries. Drags and dummies putting their finger thru it.

There was always weather stripping, but pre R-26, it was a different type that wasn’t as prone to vandalism as the later cars were What is interesting is that rather than return to the older style of windows, the MTA chose to use a metal grommet around the existing design to replace the vandal prone rubber. By the way there were quite a few R-21 and 22 cars on the #5 in 1967 since that actually got assigned there as early as 1960 when they shared fleets with the #2. Initially, they were only used on weekends when shorter trains were operated since the platforms were not yet long enough to platform a full 10 car train of R types.

So in all likelihood that could have been an R-21/22. It definitely wasn't an R-12/14. I also remember the rear set of side doors on one side not opening. Which meant the center leaf facing the rear didn't open, either.
