First Metrocards?

Posted by Alyal830 on Thu Aug 9 18:08:01 2018

Going to Aviation High School in the late 80s, the school for our train passes gave out color coded Metrocards. Although they weren’t labeled Metrocards each month we got a new one. Practically very very few stations in the system I believe had the turnstiles equipped with the ability to swipe these cards. 33rd-Rawson St station on the 7 line (Aviation High School) home station had them of course. Does anyone out there remember seeing them (cards and/or those turnstiles I mentioned) in your travels. This would have been late 1980s at least. Anyone who may have worked for the MTA back then...maybe still do....or even students at that time remember these cards at all.

MetroCard wasn't introduced until 1994.

At best, you were used as guinea pigs for a proof of concept/prototype.

I think he gets that. But it certainly would be cool to see one of the cards, wouldn't it?

I have a blue (1994-97) Metro Card in amongst my shoeboxes, someplace.

Some TA employees were issued various types of prototype fare cards before the current Metrocards were finalized.

Yes my school at the time issued them to students. Nevins St station had the metrocard equipped turnstiles. None of the nearby stations had them.

Ok, if some schools were given prototype Metrocards to use at their school station, how did they get on the subway at their home station as it could have been anywhere. Did they just display their MetroCard to the token booth clerk the same way students with regular train passes would do?
