The NYCDOT has information an possibly diagrams for what is currently under every street in NYC. So until the day that an official diagram of the 76 St/Pitkin Ave area as it is today turns up, we can just keep endlessly speculating.

Well, there definitely diagrams of the subway infrastructure as planned under Pitkin Av east of the concrete bulkhead which is about the same as the drawings of the Hillside Av extension. As I have mentioned in my other posts, in the 1930s, Pitkin Ave ended at the Bkln/Queens border and at some point was through routed with Old South Rd to make Pitkin continuous which is why Pitkin curves slightly south at approximately 79 St. Based on what the city did during the construction of the IND by through routing 6 Ave from W 3 St to Canal St in Manhattan and the tearing sown of buildings to widen Houston St and Church St to facilitate subway construction, I suspect that the same was done to Pitkin Av as preparation for the extension of the IND east of Euclid. I checked some of the NYC archives for photos of the area and I was only able to find photos from 1930 and then from 1950. The 1930 photo shows Pitkin ending at the Bkln/Qns border and the 1950 photo shows Pitkin going through so sometime in that 20 year period, Pitkin was through routed which would have made subway construction ion the area easier.

With Man Van Buren High School at 230th Street and Hillside Ave. (built in the late 60's or early 70's) that would have been a perfect terminal for the IND.

What we need to find, if it even exists, is a current NYCDOT or NYCDEP diagram of what exactly is under Pitkin Ave & 76 Street. On that glorious day the Great Mystery will be solved causing railfans everywhere to rejoice!

It’s interesting that much of the information regarding construction in the area from the actual construction of the subway infrastructure to the through routing of Pitkin Av presumably to facilitate the subway construction seems to be missing.

I lived in Bell Park Manor Terrace, 1952-1957, corner of Manor Road and the Hillside ave. at the north service road fronting that development. I remember Martin Van Buren being built.
