Female token booth clerk had look of resignation on her face as she watched them jump; she realized nobody cared so she didn't bother to say anything. She was probably afraid she'd get fired for harassing these outstanding gentlemen if she said anything. Last week, evening rush-hour, guy brazenly jumps the turnstile at super-busy Whitehall St R train entrance next to ferry (no booth there). Recently, someone jumped at Rector St downtown R (no booth there either). I wonder if these turnstile jumpers are being included in the ridership statistics; there are so many of them nowadays that they really should be added to the statistics. Last Monday, guy laying passed out on uptown Atlantic Ave D/R/N platform at 8:30am during massive rush-hour crush. Tons of people just walking around him. Saw passed out passenger on downtown E a month or two ago at 42nd laying on the subway floor. Last night 11pm R train downtown, homeless guy gets on at DeKalb & lays across bench (this was the newer car model) for remainder of trip to Bay Ridge. Ride the R after midnight and you'll now find at least 5 or 6 homeless in each car. The E is just as bad and that usually starts even earlier in the night. I'm sure the graffiti will soon come back to the trains to make us really feel like it's the 1980s. |

There IS A "Token" Booth at the South Ferry / Whitehall Street station. The booth is located in the middle distance between the turnstyles that directly serve the #1 train platform, and the turnstyles that directly serve the R-train platforms on the mezzanine level. Now this booth does not have a direct line of sight to the R-train turnstyles so as notice turnstyle jumpers or fare beaters, or an easy way to monitor activities at the #1 train turnstyles. The middle distance location of this booth is basically one of the outcomes of the TA's efforts at consolidation - having fewer manned booths through out the subway system. It should be noted that there are video cameras directly above each of the turnstyles, at all of the entrances. There are some folks that remember exactly where the "old" booths were located BEFORE the renovation and construction of the parts of the complex. Prior to the joining of the two stations (Whitehall Street, and South Ferry) the location of the "token" booth for the R-train Whitehall Street station was directly opposite the turnstyles - where now current the Metro-Card vending machines were installed. Of course there used to be a "token" booth at the northern entrance to the Whitehall Street station near Stone Street, now replaced by MetroCard vending machines. The newly constructed (twice) South Ferry #1 station at its middle and northern most entrances have un-manned MetroCard vending machines. Needless to say it, but the Whitehall Street/South Ferry does indeed have a station booth. You can argue about the effectiveness of such a booth in its present location, or the effectiveness of efforts to combat fare-jumping. Mike |

I recall reading an newspaper article back in the 1960s about the Toronto method of dealing with farebeaters at unattended entrances. If a passenger jumped the turnstile, a PA announcement would come on and in a booming voice say “Please don’t do that." |
