Ah , yes, The Canarsie Line.

Mr. Green: What's your name, motorman?
Denny Doyle: Uh, Denny Doyle.
Mr. Green: Ever get written up?
Denny Doyle: Uh, yes, sir. Once.
Mr. Green: What for?
Denny Doyle: Running a red signal. How about you?
Mr. Green: Twice. Once on the Canarsie...

That was to open all side doors on the train.

For closing there was one to close all doors to his left, another button to close all doors to his right, and another button to close the door he was looking out of.

So yes, the 3 side passenger doorways in his car each closed separately.

There one conductor on them, at least in their last days in the "Eastern Division".

I believe the same held true with 8 cars on Southern Division lines.

As delivered, the BMT standards did not have MUDC and each car required a conductor. Beginning in 1921 or thereabouts, the entire fleet was gradually retrofitted with MUDC.

Okay, so the 14th Street line received Standards which were slid down a ramp in the middle of a street near a LIRR freight branch.
I presume the Multis were delivered later, after the route was built up and over Broadway Junction. Most times, I rode Multis until the Standards came back.
The New Yorker article on Andy Byford keeps talking of a 37-minute run from Eighth Avenue to Rockaway Parkway. Was it ever any better? I felt the Multis did better speeds on the sharp curves.

Speaking of the Larry line, how far did the tracks extend past 6th Ave. before the 8th Ave. station opened? Did they dead end at the western end of the station, or did they continue? If they dead ended at the western end, did trains wrong rail until just before Third Ave. before switching over, or were there switches near 6th Ave. that are no longer there?

The center track between 6th and 8th avenues which now dead ends at 6th Av had a Y-type connection at 6th Av, the same as it still has near 8th Av.

Wonderful!!! But they don't show what motive power pushed these cars through the streets- I assume a small steam locomotive?

Also, once they descended the ramp, how did they stop? Was it possible to charge and operate the emergency brakes, even with no power? Finally, how many cars were delivered in this manner?

I'm most appreciative of whatever additional info you can supply.

Thank You

I see a winch attached to the front of #2700 at the top of the ramp. I don't know how the cars made it down the ramp and stopped. Don't forget, this was the only opening of the new subway to bring any equipment down there. Other than that, that's the most I know.

I haven’t seen any documentation that indicates that any part of the subway infrastructure existed west (RR north) of the west end of the original terminal at 6 Av/14 St. AFAIK the 2 tks ended in bumping blocks and the tunnel infrastructure ended there also. The trains switched back on a diamond Xover immediately east of 6 Av station. What tends to bear this out is the original signal chaining which started with the lowest number at the west end of 6 Ave. The signal numbers display tk Q1 and Q2 from 6 Ave east whereas immediately west of 6 Av the signal numbers display Q1W and Q2W indicating that there was no infrastructure west of 6 Av prior to its extension to 8 Av. If the middle tk had been there originally, the “W” suffix would only have appeared on the signals in the immediate area of 8 Av station and not from the west end of 6 Ave.

The next question is, did the tracks go all the way to where they extend now all along, or were they extended when the 8th Ave. station itself was built?

I don't remember who, but someone posted here that he and the late George Abere (I met him at a Sunrise Trail meeting, the nicest guy, congenial, friendly, and down to earth) walked the local streets in this area sometime since 1960 (?) and they could find no remaining surfaces traces at all of the excavation.

I've also heard/ read (latter maybe here) that no remains of any infrastructure in the tunnel exists now either.

The 8th Ave station wasn't opened until 7 years after the rest of the line, and in an IND architectural (instead of BMT) style so I doubt the tracks extended all the way to their current end before that, but I could be wrong.

The cars came from Coney Island via the SBK to Parkville Junction and thence over the LIRR to the Bushwick Yard. A small steam locomotive was then used to bring them to the 14th Street Line. They were then lowered down the ramp via a truck motor and block and tackle. The grade was 16.9 %.

As far as the BMT was concerned, there was no reason to extend the 14 St line west of 6 Ave till the IND opened. The only reason it went even that far was that there were some major department stores along 6 Av in the area that attracted ridership.

When George Abers and I were both trainmasters in the 1980s, we did quite a bit of exploring of either abandoned or never used stations mostly on the IND including the elusive 76 St/Pitkin station which we didn’t find either. We did manage to make it to Roosevelt and Utica upper, however.

Did you walk whatever remains in the 4th ave. tunnel, of the curving ramp structures on the Original subway that ascended up to GC?

in the early 90s, an employee let me enter behind the door on the south wall of the shuttle --> Lex concourse that I thought led directly to the garbage platform - instead there were remains, for a short distance - iron pillars & empty trackways - for both express tracks that ended at the tower, where you could see down into the tunnel south of GC
