Why additional (truncated) G service morning rush-hours

Posted by BrooklynTrain on Mon Jul 9 20:29:09 2018

Today thru 8/17, morning rush hours, but only between Court Sq & Bedford-Nostrand? The G runs pretty frequently as it is, and I fear this can exacerbate the backups that occur at 21st St/LIC while both tracks at Court Sq are full during morning rush hour (train can't enter Court Sq if both tracks are full). Is it as a "test run" to see how these extra trains will run during the L train shutdown?

(train can't enter Court Sq if both tracks are full)

Since the G is half-length, it's technically possible for two trains to pull in back to back at Court Square.

There is a supplement schedule in effect which would avoid a problem.

The G runs pretty frequently as it is

Max frequency is every 6 to 8 minutes. Unless there is something seriously wrong with the signals, adding extra trains shouldn't be a problem. Sounds like a test to me, during the summer when crowds are less.

I've been saying all along that when the L shuts down, they can take care of extra crowds south of B-N just by running full-length trains, but then they should add trains between Court and B-N. Looks like just maybe someone else had the same obvious thought.

I don't know if they've made any signal adjustments, but a couple of years ago when I regularly rode the G into and out of Court Sq, the trains switching tracks through the center track did so painfully and unnecessarily slowly because of the lunar white signals.

#7 trains entering and leaving Main St make similar moves but at a much faster speed. If the #7 trains had to move as slowly as the G's do in and out of Court Sq, Main St would be unacceptably congested and the line of trains waiting to enter would extend back beyond Willets Point.

The additional service is due to the construction removing the moving walkways upstairs. I believe there was concern that the reduced space upstairs during construction would cause higher concentrations of people arriving at the same time to the platform.

Would a revenue train be allowed to get that close to a parked train absent an emergency?

I can think of two occasions in regular service.

Before the BMT invaded the Queens Boulevard Line, GG's ran short trains during the non-rush hours. At the shoulder, the would be reconnected in the Continental Ave station. The previous GG would be in the front of the platform. The second GG would come in up to the rear of its leader and discharge its passengers. The two trains would be coupled to make a longer train.

It used to be that shorter trains were operated during non-rush hours. On the Flushing Line, non-rush hour trains would be 8 cars long. 3 cars were left close to the bumper at Main St. Following 8 car long trains would move in and terminate by rolling up to the parked 3 cars.

I don't think they do nowadays, but they certainly could.

They can at Court Sq. with 2 short G trains.

Pull one to the north (east) end of the station, then bring the next one on top of it.

That's... surprisingly forward thinking. I'm impressed.
