I always become really skeptical when somebody mentions privatization as a panacea.
$41 billion sounds like a whole lot, until you figure out it was doled out over 47 years. That's less than $1 billion a year, which isn't that much in govt terms.
Interesting that he doesn't say how much is actually paid to the host freight railroads, only that it is "relatively low".
As for the cheap buses, you get what you pay for. The fares are cheaper and the buses are more frequent, but how comfortable are they?

Betcha someone on BusChat can answer your question of how comfortable they are.

Lots of times, privatization simply means that unprofitable services are ended altogether. Also, the railroads were private and many of them went bankrupt, which is how we got to Amtrak in the first place, so privatization can hardly be a cure-all.

Those rail services that are "unprofitable" become so due to government interference in the first place.

We got Amtrak due to overregulation and a "Keynesian conservative" president who wanted to create it. Before that, we had about twice the number of intercity trains running.

If you knew the history of public takeovers, you'd be far less skeptical and far more demanding of removal of draconian regulations and taxation that were designed to take such services out of private hands.

Most of those intercity trains only lasted because the govt wouldn't let them get cancelled. Once the govt gave the go-ahead, the railroads couldn't get rid of them fast enough. I mean, look how many private railroads are running intercity trains now.

Again, because the government was regulating them out of existence. The federal government and states were putting onerous tax burdens on them at the same time they were subsidizing the roads and airports. The reason why we didn't have widespread private sector high-speed rail beginning in the 60s (we had the technology back then) was exactly due to government intervention.

That's his "explanation" for everything he doesn't like.

The railroads went bankrupt because of taxes and government interference.

Hurricane Sandy battered New York because of taxes and government interference.

Adolf Hitler was the son of Hr. Taxes Hitler and Fr. Government Interference Hitler.

The civil war was primarily fought over taxes and government interference.

The Roman Empire fell because of taxes and government interference.

The dinosaurs went extinct because of taxes and government interference.

Isn't it strange how the US govt tends to have some kind of influence on huge industries in the US. *sarcasm*

We'd be able to bring people back from the dead if it weren't for draconian regulations and taxation that were designed to keep people in the ground after they croak.
