103/Broadway

Posted by K. Trout on Mon Jul 9 17:26:05 2018

Was at 103 St waiting for a 1 lately, and noticed that the north end of the station (the 1940s extension) has no pillars, columns, or walls whatsoever over the tracks. This is a bit unusual - were there formerly switches here?

The Broadway (Boulevard) Line was planned as a two track subway. After construction had begun it was decided to change it into a three track line. There was a considerable amount of re-construction. A third track was added at 103rd Street to the east of the original two track. Consequently a new wall and ceiling had to be carved out of the east wall.

Very interesting. Thanks! I did notice the ceiling appeared to have extra reinforcement so I guess that's the support for the expanded tunnel.

That is a very interesting bit of history. It also puts the 137th Street-City College station and train yard into a new light. And the viaduct over Broadway at 125th Street also begins to look at bit differently if it were just a two track line.

Here is a photo, from the website referenced in another thread, that shows the subway under construction along Broadway at 103 Street. It does appear that the excavation has been enlarged along the east side of Broadway.

This is also the point where the tunnel to Lenox Avenue branches off below the Broadway local tracks.

And notice the other high rise under construction. Many of those high-rises are still there today.
