I always wondered why Lexington Ave was so wide compared to the surrounding streets. SubTalk finally explained it!

One thing I not seen is any pictures of The Lex running through Pratt Institute. I wonder does anybody have any photos? It still would have been quite the site through our kitchen window. I use to sit for hours at the kitchen window watching The Myrtle Ave El during the winter.

Thank you for your daily almanac post. They are greatly appreciated.

Plenty of pics of the el running through what became the Pratt campus and following streets, here's but one on line:

I really want to see the original configuration of Grand and Myrtle with only the Lex el running straight across Myrtle, and then short time later north Myrtle turning onto the Old Main heading to Park Ave., and the south Myrtle turning onto the Lex heading towards Gates with no track connection between the north & south lines occurring for a while. That intersection saw a couple configuration changes.

The original proposed route for the Old Main Line was to have been on Gates Ave, instead of Lexington Ave.

Thanks for the link. I should have stated, pictures from the ground of the El passing through Pratt. Or pics from the ground at Dekalb or Willoughby. Pictures of the original configuration heading toward Park Ave. would be very interesting also.

Interesting. Thanks for that tidbit. I`m still wrapping my mind around the B-52 traveling east on Gates Ave. instead of Quincy St.

Interesting to see that nobody asked WHY that route on Hudson- Park-Grand-Lexington was chosen, as opposed to a full Broadway route, which came in 1888! I let you guys figure that one out!

There's a couple photos online that show the DeKalb Ave. station on the Lex looking towards Bed-Stuy on DeKalb Av. Shows what became Pratt Studios where I took Industrial Design classes 30 years after the el came down. The studs for the staircases were still in the sidewalk on Grand when I went there.

I do believe I've also seen photos taken from the street looking up Grand towards Myrtle. Not a lot of room for auto traffic between the pillars.

Would like to see photos of the structure under where Grand and Myrtle intersected again. When the Myrtle structure was being stripped in 1970 I do believe you could see the tangle of structure at that intersection quite clearly.

Interesting to note that there was a cable car line on Park Ave. from Grand to Broadway for a few years. Used technology that weren't used by other cable car lines so they wouldn't run into patent issues and the costs involved there. Also the line was funded kind of peculiar also, and a few people made off with the cash and some got caught/jailed when things went kaput.

The els radiating from downtown Brooklyn were built by independent competing companies, with some consolidation while construction commenced or shortly after operations began.

Fascinating story of all these companies, who funded them, what got built, not built and who sued whom.

It’s interesting that you mention the lack of street space under the Lex since it was pointed out to me many years ago. Even though Lex was narrow, it never occurred to the builders to place the columns on the sidewalk as was done on Myrtle and a number of other Bkln and Queens el structures.

That still doesn't explain why Lexington Ave-Park Ave were chosen, instead of Broadway or Myrtle Ave, at the time!

Lexington Ave was wider than Gates Ave, which had been the original planned route to Grand Ave from Broadway.
