R-179

Just rode R-179 # 3093 on the J. I also rode #3060.
I noticed in the A car there is an advertisement frame next to the door to the cab. This is a good idea since these large blank surfaces were vulnerable to acid vandalism. ALso the fiberglass frame around the side windows is A light blue color instead of the whitish color of the R-160. There are couple of other cosmetic changes as well I also think it is pretty cool that the J currently has R-32, R-42, R-143, R-160 & R-179's in service.

I have now seen the R-179 4 cars sets on the J what about the 5 car sets for the A/C? is set 3010-19 in service somewhere?

The fiberglass framing around the side windows is actually a very light blue on all the NTTs but it is light enough that it could be mistaken for white. Some of the NTTs also have a rigidized stainless steel sheathing around the inside of the frame covering part of the fiberglass.

i think all of the 160-s have that rigidized steel around the inside of the frame and the end panels. This was the first thing I noticed when I first rode an R-160. The problem is the vandals figured out that the etching acid is quite effective in applying a vandal tag.
The NYC transit workers buff it out but it does leave an unesthetic mark.

3010-3019 is not in service, one of the 5 car sets will be sent back Bomnardier for mods, cause NYCT doesn't have enough manpower to do it themselves.

No other 5 car set has been delivered yet.

It's not a question of NYCT having enough personnel.

The cars are under warranty. Haven't been in service yet. Bombardier technicians do the work. NYCT personnel do nothing to the cars.

The first couple of sets don't have it, but almost all of the other ones do.

That makes sense. I'm guessing the modifications are too involved for Bombardier technicians to do on TA property?

Interesting since there were certain modifications that needed to be addressed on the R-32s when first delivered and Budd Co people were working on them in CIYd.
