Court Square Transfer Passage - LI City

Posted by andy on Sat Apr 14 08:53:35 2018

Yesterday I was transferring from the E to the #7 at Court Square. I noticed that the moving walkway only operates in one direction – towards the E/M 23rd-Ely Station. There is no walkway going the opposite way, that is from the E/M to the #7. Anyone know why?

Is there only one walkway? I forget. If so, obviously it can only move in one direction. They must have stats on which direction is the more popular at different times of day. It probably goes the other way at other times.

perhaps it could, but I understand knot.

Hardly matters, some of us can apparate from one place to another, and just ride on the subways for the fun of it.

If you look at the existing walkway - the mechanical portion against the wall is rather wide. If they added another moving walkway for the opposite direction there probably would not be much room for people to walk (if they weren't using the walkway).

That walkway is rather old and I am sure that a replacement is not a priority item.

"apparate"? How dismissive of the overwhelming majority of New York subway riders, who don't ride the subway just for the fun of it.

Passengers only travel in one direction. Everybody goes from the the G to the E in the morning, and from the E to the G in the evening.

The MTA anticipates that the Court Square station will be seeing a big increase in traffic during the L train shutdown. In order to increase the capacity of the passageway, there is a report that the people mover will be removed this summer and not be replaced in the future (if there is one).

Repeal & Do Not Replace Obamacarrier

I will be hosting "A Farewell to the People Mover" during the last hours of its operation. It will be a 3 hour event, with several runbys and plenty of opportunities to photograph the people mover. When the plug is finally pulled on the operation, People Moverfans will be allowed to take home any parts of the machinery. Fans can bring hand trucks, forklifts, and block and tackle to facilitate removal. Admission to the event is $25 for the general public, $40 for Transit Museum members and $75 for SubChatters.

I heard that the reason why the people mover operates in one direction was to pacify the (G) line riders who complained of the long walk to transfer to the (E).

And it makes sense that possibly the larger flow of traffic is from the G in the morning and to the G in the afternoon. If that's true, then that's the way the people mover should operate.

Correct, but there is also the possibility that the people mover is old an would need to be replaced. Also the speed of the mover which is probably slower than the average strap hangers brisk walk to slow the flow. I'm thinking the former.

Bill: You're right about the speed. Most of us could outwalk it but it was good for the old folks and the mothers with kids.

The tourist from Kansas probably thought it moved at warp speed.

Wait a minute. Whenever I use a people mover, I walk on it, so I travel twice as fast as either walking or the mover by itself.

There is no room for two and allow enough room for ADA clearance in the walkway.

There are actually two moving walkways in the passage, but they are essentially one because they form a long line with a break in the middle. One or both of the walkways is often down for repairs and when they do function, it's always in the direction of towards the E/M.

Ah, so even in the evening rush, when you'd expect the bigger traffic flow to be from the E/M to the G, they're still heading toward the E/M?

Maybe the reverse motor is broken. :)

and why would a tourist from Kansas find themselves getting off at 23rd & Ely, except if they were lost?

- Paris Metro had a people mover at Montparnasse Bienvenue to transfer from line 12 to line 4(?) in 1968. There was more than one walkway, and they were moving in both directions.
There were people movers at other transfer points as well, but I don't rememeber where.

I made a transfer at that station a year ago, from the 6 to (IIRC) the 13, and it was an endless journey along multiple corridors and up several stairways.
