N & D Brooklyn Express

Posted by rbseabeach on Wed Apr 11 15:15:18 2018

I remember back to pre-1983 "red flag" days.
The N and the B (The B was the west end back then) would go express from 36th to Pacific Street just like the B/D pull into west 4th from 34th or the 4/5 pull into 86th from 125th St. Ever since the red flag days of 1983, the N & D now travel at a constant speed until then get to 25th Street southbound or Union Street northbound. They always put the breaks on and slow up, then they speed up again to pull into Atlantic Ave or 36th Street. Why is this so? I have not ever been on the express where it goes fully express from start to finish. I even recall looking out the front windows and seeign all green lights.

They ruin a great express sprint.

Yep! I tell everybody the same thing! I remember in the early 1980s I could get from Midtown Manhattan to my 8th Avenue Sea Beach train station in like 40 minutes or even less! The trains ran Full Tilt Express from Pacific Street 236th Street, no slowing down. When I was in high school I would transfer at 4th Avenue 9th Street and when I was waiting for the fourth annual local to come, the express trains would roar by going about 50 miles an hour it seems. Now the train is practically stopped at 25th Street and just limps into 36th Street

And someone tell me why. The answer isn't the timers. Why are there timers there? What disaster are they trying to prevent? Why did they slow everything down? Every other system in the world operates faster trains than this. And don't say this is "different". It isn't.

I remember when I was a kid in grammar school and then when I went to high school, the trains would come screaming to the station and slow down on the platform length with the brakes screeching at the end

exactly. me too.
I thought it was a track issue back when they had the red flags in 1983. But it has never changed. Why?
I can even recall being on the express on a weekend with all green lights and STILL The slow down.

I can even recall many times the R actually arrives before the express or it arrives a few seconds later.

The term was "red TAG” not red flag. With a red flag the trains would have to stop completely. For some inane reason, the MTA decided to put GT signals N/B approaching Pacific St and S/B approaching both 36 St and 59 St on the 4 Av exp tks. I had mentioned in several posts on this topic, when the Chicago connection organized operations planning, all GT signals were to be evaluated for their necessity and those not necessary were to be removed and those remaining were to be calibrated at 3 MPH ABOVE the posted speed limit to insure that the signals would clear if the train were operated at the posted speed. I recall checking the GT signals S/B on B1 S/O Prospect Pk on the F which are posted at 30 MPH. While the train was moving at a reasonable speed to clear the signals. the train was actually going at 25 MPH 5 MPH slower than the posted speed limit and this was IND signaling which was usually more accurate than the other divisions.

I wonder if the timer manufacturer has a special deal with the TA for every timer that gets installed.:) Just saying...

The timers are manufactured by the same companies that supply the rest of the signal equipment.

GT stands for (G)rade (T)ime usually intended to enforce a slightly slower speed of trains downgrade but used in other places like curves and switches as well.

Back in the day, Brighton locals were timed departing Ave H northbound to Newkirk Ave while the express wasn’t. I remember once returning home from school the Q express I was on overshot Newkirk Ave once by a few cars, thinking two and a half car lengths R68 consist. Sheepshead Bay northbound both tracks were timed at one point too, not sure if the local is still timed but the express rolls right on in.

Worst signal timing I experience every night is the 4 crossing over to the local at Atlantic Ave. No train ahead but still has to stop at the home signal with a complete stop, yet approaching the signal slow as hell.

They are also unneeded, like most other grade timers.
