1957 TA Baseball Schedule

Posted by X-Astorian on Sat Apr 14 09:35:07 2018

The last year for a three team New York.

Aren't running times shown just about the same today?

The Sept 29 game was the last one the Giants played at the Polo Grounds. I was at that game but sadly, the Giants lost to Pittsburgh.

I saw the Mets at the Polo Grounds. It may have been my first baseball game.

I saw the Mets play the Dodgers and the Giants many times at Shea.

I was at the 1969 playoff game 3 where they won the NL pennant

I was at the 1969 world series where they won. I always mention this when I see MIB 3 to whoever is there.

I saw the Beatles at Shea. That's a bit off topic, except as always I took the subway.

The city didn't die in 1957. It was a much slower near death than that. And it is more alive than ever.

1957- the year the old City died!

There was a story making the rounds in Brooklyn after the Dodgers left.

"You're in a room with Stalin, Hitler and Walter O'Malley (owner of the Dodgers). You have a gun with only two bullets. Who do you shot?

The answer: O'Malley TWICE.

Actually, I would have saved one of those bullets for Robert Moses. His hatred of the O'Malley family started with a political feud with Walter's father, dating back to the Hylan administration.

I'm surprised that Robert Moses didn't offer the Giants the new stadium in Queens, instead of the Dodgers. Guess that they just didn't draw enough fans at the Polo Grounds to promise them that!

Great posting. Thanks!

I was at two of the games on the schedules shown. May 25, 1957 at Ebbets (Brooklyn vs. NY Giants; Giants won 8-7 thanks to Willie Mays hitting a double, triple, and home run). June 22, 1957 at Yankee Stadium (NYY vs. Chicago White Sox; Yankees won in 13 innings 6-5 thanks to a Yogi Berra walkoff home run).

Ah, the memories!

From what I have heard, the Giants wanted to leave NY even before the Dodgers thought of it so it’s doubtful that a stadium in Queens would have enticed them to stay.

"The city didn't die in 1957."

True, but Brooklyn had its heart ripped out. If Brooklyn remained as an independent city, then that phrase would be a better fit.

True, but Brooklyn had its heart ripped out.

It was a double whammy for the Brooklyn railfans. They lost the trolleys in 56 and the Dodgers in 57. Steeplechase Park didn't last much longer either.

The Giants struggled after Durocher left as manager. They were a second division team in '56 and '57, the only bright spot being Willie Mays.

Stoneham was out the door. anyways - he had his AAA franchise in Minneapolis, and a new stadium being built there. O'Malley needed a second team out there to make scheduling out there feasible. He did some of the groundwork for Stoneham, then got him drunk, and took him to the site of Candlestick at 1 in the afternoon - before the cold wind started, and sold him on the Bay area...

In 1956 Manhattan borough president Hulan Jack unveiled a plan for a 100,000 seat stadium for the Giants on the Far West Side, to be built atop the NY Central RR 60th Street Yards. Nothing ever came of this proposal because, as other posters noted, Giant owner Horace Stoneham had already decided to decamp to Minneapolis where the team had its top minor league franchise. Then Walter O'Malley stepped in and convinced Stoneham to bring the Giants to San Francisco so that the two teams could continue their storied rivalry on the West Coast.

National League president, Warren Giles, had told O'Malley that he would approve the move from Brooklyn, only if another team went west with him. So, who would move? The New York Giants suffered from a fan loss because the neighborhoods around the Polo Grounds were changing. Long time residents were fleeing to the suburbs, especially after the Colonial Park (now Rangel) Houses were completed in 1951, on the site of the old 159th St el yards. On a personal note, my father used to sell hot dogs at the Polo Grounds.

I remember thinking that tenants in the Colonial Pk Houses who lived on the south side of the complex would have a great view of games being played at the Polo Grounds.

There are those who say Mays would have broken Ruth's all-time home run record (or at least reached the 714 plateau before Hank Aaron) if he'd played in a home park without all that wind.

Mays would have done fine in Minnesota - Metropolitan Stadium turned out to be pretty hitter friendly over the years.

Willie was hitting .477 for the Minneapolis Millers in early 1951 when he was called up to the Giants. One day in Milwaukee he hit a live drive so hard it went right through the outfield fence. Instead of repairing it, a circle was painted around the hole.
