Second Avenue Subway Ridership Question

Posted by qveensboro_plaza on Mon Mar 19 19:37:07 2018

When the Q extension to 96/2 Avenue opened in Jan 2017, there was a series of posts showing the ridership at each station. It was rather lower than initial projections, as I recall.

Now that we are a bit more than a year along, does anyone have more recent figures? It would be interesting to see if ridership has increased, decreased or leveled off.

I don't ride the line regularly, but whenever I have boarded going downtown at 63/Lex or at Times Square, the cars seem to have a good number of riders. To my eye, it seems more crowded than the M, going to/from Queens Blvd.

Thanks very much.

My gut feel is that it's been level. The line gets good usage, but crush loading doesn't really seem to happen under normal circumstances.

Most important, has there been a noticeable and measurable improvement on the Lexington Av line? Less crowding, less dwell time, more reliability, better on-time performance?

Realistically, I wouldn’t expect much truly heavy ridership on the SAS unless and until it is by some good fortune connected to some branch line in the Bronx as was originally intended.

I don't have any numbers either, but the Q can be very crowded headed sb in the PM rush at Times Square. My guess has always been that they are coming from the hospital area along York. NY Presb, Sloan, HSS, etc... All of them used to get on at 68th/Lex. Of course there are people getting on at the other 2 stations but the few times I've been up there in PM rush 72nd is always the crowded one.

My observation is the trains going NB are only packed when there are one of the frequent delays. If I lived up that way and had a choice I would choose the Q every time as it isn't nearly as crowded. The flip side is that it isn't nearly as frequent.

IDK the numbers but it should be interesting to see ridership levels today with the Lexington Avenue suspended.

I don't have any stats, but from personal observation, during the PM Rush the CI bound trains seem to be more crowded than the 96th bound trains, which is the peak direction during the PM Rush.

Here are the latest numbers.

Weekly turnstile counts are from Friday to the following Thursday. The average weekday entry+exit figures for the SAS 72, 86 and 96 stops were: 72,191 entries; 55,635 exits; 127,826 total for the week from 3/2/18 to 3/8/18. The corresponding figures for 3/3/2017-3/9/2017 were: 68,401 entries; 55,175 exits; 123,576 total. That's far short of the 200K daily users promised by Gov. Cuomo.

The counts for the Lex for the same periods for the 68, 77, 86 and 96 stops were: 113,833; 89,624; 203,457 in 2018 and 127,223; 96,474; 223,697 in 2017 and 171,562; 121,542; 293,104 in 2016.

Not much has changed in the last year regarding SAS use.

My wife and I rode from 63/Lex to 86/2nd on Saturday March 10, about 17:20. Train had a good crowd up to 86th, and a decent number staying on to 96th. If they actually manage to build Phase 2, I'm sure both it, and Phase 1 will do well, or at least, adequately,

Thank you for these numbers.

It looks as though the initial projections were rather off-base. The Lex counts, I assume, include people traveling uptown above 96 Street. This is probably not a very large number but still it would inflate the count somewhat in comparison to the 2Av numbers.

96/2Av has the largest entry/exit volume, due perhaps to bus transfers, and 96/Lex has the most dramatic drop in counts from 2016 to now.

So I guess the new subway is a qualified success, taking some pressure off the Lex, but not yet (and perhaps never) fulfilling its role as a new East Side trunk line.

Maybe some MTA reports have included 63rd and some have not. What is undeniable is that the character of 63rd has massively changed as a result of the SAS. It's way more useful because you can go to many more locations from there now. There is also a lot of internal transfer traffic between the Q and the F that the MTA doesn't even report on (or possibly even measure).
