LIRR Afternoon Headache

Posted by Bill from Maspeth on Fri Mar 16 14:39:59 2018

For about the last 90 minutes, as to this posting time, no LIRR service on the Port Jeff, Ronkonkoma and Oyster Bay branches due to a big fire east of Jamaica on the opposite side of Hillside Maintenance Facility. I saw a pic on Facebook.

4 Alarm Fire in a recycling plant as of 2:47 PM.

I would say the PM rush is very much in doubt.

Of course, this is the MTA's fault, just like this morning's Amtrak Portal Bridge outage was NJT's fault!

I know that recycling plant, ride by it every time. They always have plastic bags all baled up for recycling, some bags carried by wind and stuck in tree branches.

They've come up with a contingency plan. They want all LIRR main line riders to go to Babylon, then take a diesel shuttle to Hicksville via the central branch, where service on the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches is running to points east.

What a nightmare.

About 5 min ago, a train of two DE-30's and C-3 coaches passed by my window.

No MU service at this time.

Ronkonkoma Branch Customers
Delays Posted: 03/16/2018 5:38PM

The LIRR is providing hourly train service from Penn to Huntington & Ronkonkoma, as service is restored on 2 of the 4 tracks through Hillside. Eastbound service is also restored on the Hempstead and Oyster Bay branches. Customers are advised to anticipate cancellations, delays, & possible crowding conditions. Westbound service remains suspended as a result of a 5-alarm fire at a recycling plant next to LIRR tracks near Hillside. Eastbound Ronkonkoma Branch trains will depart Penn Station hourly at 51 minutes past the hour. Eastbound Huntington trains will depart Penn Station hourly at 17 minutes past the hour. Thank you for your patience.

Be nice at times like this if the West Hempstead Branch still ran to Mineola.
Thanks to a demand by the NYS PSC in the 1930's that grade crossings be eliminated north of West Hempstead for such service to continue, it does not.

With fireman on the tracks, third rail power is probably turned off.

I'm sure those firemen won't enter the tracks until the LIRR is notified. Funny how all these phuck ups happen before rush hour.

They would run what they have. SRO with conductors and trainmen not collecting tickets since the aisles would crowded.
