This day brings back fuzzy memories of when I marched in the parade under the banner of the long since defunked Metro-North Emerald Society. Assembling in front of the now extinct Mc Ann's bar & grill on 44th st between Vanderbuilt & Madison, we were beyond ready to march when it was our turn. As it turned out that year (1985) we were the last group to march. As we went up 5th Ave, the crowds were thinning out and The sanitation sweepers were at out heels. When we went by the reviewing stand, they were taking it down! But we didn't care. We had enough Budweiser and several wee drams of Jamieson's in us to press forward without any remorse. That was the first and last time the MN Emerald Society marched. Most of my fellow marchers are now deceised, retired or joined A.A. It was fun while it lasted. Jack McCarthy would have been proud of us! |
