If the entrance is at 149th street why did they name the station 148th street?

This has been gone over before. It's to avoid confusion with the other 149th St. station on the IRT.

The LIRR Stations closed had little or no patronage at the end. The closings were done to eliminate the need to build high level platforms for the new C3 diesel car fleet that was being placed into service in 1998.

Andy: I rode the lower Montauk Line once. One of the stations was just a street intersection.

Barry: I think that it was just a New York thing. Why was "Downstairs Records" actually upstairs? Why does the Broadway subway run on 7 Avenue while the 7 Avenue subway run on Broadway?

Just kidding. Hope to see you on member's day.

All the "stations" on the lower Montauk Line were gravel extending out from the ROW. Fresh Pond did have a concrete stairway (if you could find it behind the Used Car Lot) down to the tracks. Richmond Hill was the only "elaborate " station. Mill Neck Station had been converted to a town hall/police station back in the '50's, with only an asphalt pavement platform.

It was an attempt to ameliorate the fact that the previous terminal, 145th, was totally inadequate, as it could not be expanded to full-length platforms. A successful, clever use of yard space to create a new station cheaply. There are some other places this could be done.

Years ago it was proposed to build a station in the Livonia Avenue Yard. It would have been called "Flatlands Avenue".

There was also a rush hour only “Park and Ride” platform built in Westchester Yd but it didn’t last very long.

The Pitkin Yard would be a perfect candidate. There's a lot of housing going up in the adjacent area.

No would be the correct answer. Only Tunnelrat knows the correct location. Apparently all records of its construction have been lost to history.

Livonia Yard, as was mentioned. This could also feed into a short extension to Starrett City and the nearby mall.

Also, a station could be built in the 6 train yard near the medical center and Hutchinson Center.

The problem with locations like Pitkin Yd and even the one in Westchester Yd is that those locations are basically branches off the mainline that would require some sort of an extra service to operate during off hours. 148 St on the other hand was merely an extension of the existing mainline past the terminal station as would be the case if the Livonia Av Line were extended through the yard.

Pitkin yard is easy. A one stop extension of the C. Overnight make it a shuttle to Euclid.

The two stubs, which would have connected the Pitkin Yard to the never-built Pitkin Ave extension to 75th St (or 76th) station and beyond, were removed from service. They had been called A-7 and A-8 and are shown in Peter Dougherty's book, "TRACKS of the New York City SUBWAY". I have the Third Edition and the Pitkin Yard, Euclid Ave, and Grant Ave stations are shown, along with the tracks, on page 66 of that edition. I'm sure RandyO or someone else here can tell you when those track stubs were removed.

There was a Park and Ride station in Westchester Yd for a while, but the problem with that is that unlike the situations with Lenox and Livonia, the yard station would be in effect a branch off the mainline and require a dedicated service in order to provide full time service or else it would be a part time service and possibly negating the purpose of the station anyhow. The only lines that have the mainline going directly into the yard thus not requiring an additional service are Lenox and Livonia.

That is just the point I was trying to make. Such a station would require an entirely new service in the form of the midnight shuttle to Euclid which would probably not make it worth the expense.

I can’t say for sure when they were actually removed, but when I went there with George Abere in 1962, the tracks, signals and stop arms were still there although the switches had been removed. The tunnels also ended in mounds of earth floor to ceiling. When we returned after we were both trainmasters in 1983, the tracks had been removed and the cinder block walls often referred to, and erroneously mentioned as being under Pitkin Ave, had been put in place. Oddly, the signals were still in place although the lenses were either missing or broken.

Flatlands Av? The yard ends at Stanley Av, several blocks north of Flatlands. A more logical name would have been Linden Blvd.

I'm sure that some have you have noticed that where the Livonia Av line tracks curve from Livonia to head to the yard (around Cleveland or Elton Sts), there is evidence of a provision to run the tracks down Newlots Av. I wonder where that would have ended up if built. It isn't that far to Fountain Av, where Newlots ends at a housing project (which of course was not there in the 1920s when the Livonia line was built). Wonder if it was going to head off to Queens via Linden Blvd.

This was a provision for a route to run from New Lots Avenue to Jamaica Bay via Linwood and then east to the city line. It was proposed in the 1920's but had a low construction priority.

Well, the dedicated service into Westchester Yard could be an extension of the 6s that now terminate at 177th during rush, with a shuttle to/from 177th at other times.

However the off hour shuttle to 177 St still constitutes an extras service that would be needed and consequently an additional expense that probably wouldn’t be justified by the small amount of ridership that it would generate.

Linden Blvd for sure. However, it looks like Linwood St on the eastern side of the yard is primarily industrial buildings, perhaps there wouldn't be significant NIMBY opposition to building an el to extend to Flatlands...
