Since you like R-27's, would the red R-30's would be included ?

I know the R-44's weren't everyone's favorite car, but there are some here who would disagree. It's just like the last photo, something that was part of the everyday fabric of NYC is now gone. Except for the R-44 in the museum.

Yes, the R-27's get no love. Red R-30's even less. People today equate red cars with garbage trains.

My only complaints about the R44 were the doors seemed slow, and the replacement light shields on the ends of the car were fugly.

I like/liked them a lot better than the R68s, at an rate.

Shouldn't that be reversed ? Graffiti free red R-30's looked much better than graffitied R-27's.

Do you know there were Red R-27's that weren't overhauled ?

I wrote the first timetable for the JFK Exp and I advised the Chief Schedule Maker that we needed to check the run times of the rush hour A which ran exp in Bkln only during the rush hour at the time and he told me to make it up with just one run time over the 24 hours. When we examined the finished product it turned out that we had scheduled a JFK to pass an A on A3 tk somewhere between Nostrand and Utica Aves. As a result, a special train of R-46s was sent out during the rush hour with 2 schedule makers myself included and a trainmaster and that was how we came up with a proper running time for the JFK.

During the period from 1968 to early 1970, the TA painted some R-27s and 30s along with some R-16s a tartar red like the IRT’s R-29s and 33s as a temporary paint scheme while the MTA came up with something new. The agency finally decided on the Ronan silver and blue which was applied to the cars but unfortunately soon covered in graffiti.

R-46 or R-44 ?

I heard that R-38's or some other equipment other than R-44/46's were once assigned on that run. True or false ?

Thanks randyo, but the R-27's I were referred to was painted in the Redbird scheme. This was during the graffiti free days when the TA was shooting for an all graffiti free fleet. Some R-27's were painted Redbird of which I should have photos of.

When necessary. The rule was no JFK ABD's (interval not run), so if it was necessary to "steal" a "B" train, it was done. Therefore the B line had the cancelled interval.

Agreed, I heard from the railfan grapevine about a graffiti train being used on the JFK Express. Kinda funny since the passengers were paying a premium fare. Could have been the R-38's, which were running at that time on the (B).
