Joke, right?

Poor Lindenthal's 59th Street cross-Hudson rail bridge went nowhere thanks to no support from NYC plus the Coast Guard's 200-foot high-water-mark clearance requirement.

The Poughkeepsie bridge, once the main artery for trains between Washington DC and Boston, is now the "Walkway over the Hudson". Really twisted.

Except for troop trains during WWII, I think passenger service ended in 1916 or 1917, after the Hell Gate Bridge was completed.

Yabbut, how are we going to get SNCF to Queens? Oh, wait, see Harry Harrison’s /A Transatlantic Tunnel! Hurrah!/. Though on a great circle route, I’d expect it to come in more from the northeast, perhaps hooking up to the Second Avenue Subway in the Bronx.

It's a bold proposal, but the height, plus the fact there is only 2 tracks each way at the station, make me believe it will not come close to servicing the needs of Amtrak riders, let alone NJT. I'm not even considering whether midtown neighborhoods will allow 2 big bridges to cut through them, as well as the loss of property to accommodate them.

They left out the bubble pod PRT vehicles that some architects keep trying to push. Note that they also think pedestrians and the bicycles/electric bicycles are going to play well together when there's a bazillion of them. Let's also add Tube Transport System like in Futurama.

Supposedly, it would be completely over 38th and 39th Streets. So the only building that now stands in the way would be the Javits Center. Or maybe the thing is supposed to pass above the Javits? And trains would stop only to drop off and pick up passengers, then proceed to Queens or New Jersey, so there would not be a need for many tracks. How the tracks would connect on either end isn't clear, the map shows only the road connections to the LIE and NJ 495, but the Queens end is right by the LIRR/NEC. It is still an absolutely absurd fantasy, but the need to take property is not one of its problems.

As a practical matter, where would the anchorages be located?

That quickly cut off the ABE area from direct access to Washington and Boston. Also downgraded the importance of the L&HR. Not to mention, Boston North Station got fewer destinations.

I don't recall exactly how wide 38th and 39th Sts are, but I think a big bridge for holding 2 railroad tracks and 2 other levels of traffic would barely fit. Once you then try to squeeze in a sizeable station, then you get the property acquisition. Even if it's a pass-through station you still need to handle the people and luggage involved, which could mean something like Newark Penn, at least.

As long as we're aiming for the sky, we might as well throw in another two levels to complete the expressway connection between what are now NY 495 and NJ 495 (originally I-495 on both ends) that Robert Moses wanted to build many moons ago.

I think we'd have a better shot at a massive deep-bore tunnel.

There is no NY495. The NY portion is I-495.

The portion of what is signed as I-495 between the Midtown Tunnel and the BQE is no longer an interstate highway despite being signed I-495.

It would have had the chance to be if the Mid-Manhattan Expressway were built.

No. If so, the sign would have the word "TO" above it.

The anchorages hold the cables. The two anchorages support the the bridge live and dead load at only 2 locations.

They are massive structures that occupy a lot of real estate. So much for the idea that these bridges would not require vast amounts of expensive Manhattan real estate.

Who needs a suspension bridge? Use a cable-stayed bridge. The anchorages can be offshore.
