They were the most trouble prone.

The WF Steinways were pulled after 30 yrs of service (1939-69). My guess as to what led them to an "early" date with the scrappers torch was that they were such a small fleet, thus expendable. I don't know if they had any reliability issues.

Remember the 1966 Jamaica Yard crisis ? The oldest Arnines were actually assigned to the Concourse, so Jamaica Yard's were about 30 years old. They were falling apart faster than the BMT Standards which were 20 years older.

Though you missed the R-42's. Still a few on the J, I believe.

Well, they did say it was prewar technology, not prewar vintage. Still sucks, though.

The 20 R-38s that were on the property were pressed in service on the Ethel and Fred lines, one trainset on each line. Then Jamaica Yard had to borrow 32 R-16s and put them on the GG. Finally a group of condemned BMT standards were pulled off the scrapline and sent back to revenue service.

Except that it wasn’t prewar technology either, since the SMEE braking system as used on R-10s and up (except for the R-44s and 46s and NTTs) is a postwar development as are the push button interlocking machines as first used at Euclid Ave.

Speaking of NOT complete rebuilding... sometimes, on R32s, the original pale blue of the seats shows through cracks in the new black/gray paint.

Still for that black/gray paint to have bonded as well as it seems to, and have lasted nearly 30 years, is also quite interesting. I would have thought that any paint applied directly to plastic would chip almost immediately... so I had assumed, until recently, that R32 seats had been replaced. Apparently not.

Well, the Triplexes lasted 38-40 years, which isn't terrible- though I suppose they could have made it to 50.

Really shameful were the Multis, R12/17/21/22/27. The 12s were going into work service by the late 60s, and the 17/21/22 just managed to make their 30th birthdays. I'm deliberately leaving out the R14s and R15s from this list, as those cars did, from what I can tell, get a few years past 30 in revenue service.

R16= we've covered that issue- lemons almost from Day 1.

Once in a while, you see the gray paint scraped off revealing PINK seat underneath, obviously snatched off an R27.

I don't really think it's a neat article. This is a revolving story and the theme remains the same; if it's old it can't be as good as 2018.

MDBF down to around 33,000. They need another major GOH to improve. These SMS's don't seem to be enough. They should also make a concerted effort to park those consists during non rush hours.

I understand that they're not running well but that commensurate with the amount of attention they receive. And I'm sick of this signal crap already.

Those R units took a beating from deferred maintenance. Most of the R-17/21/22s were shot by the time they were pulled. And unlike the Triplexes, which were sent to premature slaughter, the R-16s were thankfully put out of their misery.
