Andy's Almanac - March 1 (a little late, sorry)

Posted by andy on Wed Mar 7 19:21:10 2018

March 1, 1968: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is formally launched, becoming the parent agency of NYC Transit Authority, MABSTOA, Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority. MTA, originally called MCTA (C as in “commuter”) had controlled the Long Island Rail Road since January 1966, so on this date 50 years and seven days ago LIRR became part of much larger transportation agency. That setup remains to this day, with Metro-North’s former railroads (NY Central and New Haven), and Staten Island Railway, added between 1969 and 1971.

If I remember my history correctly, the MTA was created in whole or in part to curb Robert Moses's power and allow toll revenues from his empire, the Triboro Bridge and Tunnel Authority, to be used for mass transit. Its creation was made possible by the Rockefeller brothers, Nelson (governor of New York) and David (president of Chase Manhattan Bank).

It's all explained in great and exquisite detail in Robert Caro's masterpiece "The Power Broker".

100% correct about that, including the reference to the Caro biography of Moses. My own book, From a Nickel to a Token (2015, Fordham Press), also covers the MTA creation in the last chapter (20).

One of MTA Chairman, William Ronan's most memorable acts was enticing Robert Moses to give up his little kingdom- The Triboro Bridge & Tunnel Authority. Ronan finally got Moses to sign it over by giving him a seat on the MTA Board. All went well for Moses, until Ronan fully consolidated the TBTA into the MTA. When that was completed, Moses was deliberately frozen out of MTA meetings. Moses quit in disgust.

Well, for better or worse, this corporate structure has, to my understanding, lasted longer than any other (BoT, IRT, BRT/BMT, independent NYCTA) that controlled the subways. (Railroads another story)

We complaint about it, often with good reason- but it has stood the test of time.

Sure, it has lasted a lot longer. If you overcharged NYCTA and LIRR bus and train riders, as well as charging those outrageous tolls on the TB&TA, you would last a very long time too! plus, the other monies they get. Spoken like a true Company Man!!!
