Probably 50/50 with NTT.The first train I took in each direction had an R32 show up. I notice they tend to fleet SMEE and NTT trains in batches. |

Seen at least 5 sets on the J today, three in ENY yard and 2 in service, I didn't even ride the line end to end, just from Broadway Junction to Flushing Av, 32's are still easy to find on the J. And no, no 32's have been retired recently, the 179's are bumping 32's to the A/C lines, R32 A trains a lot more common these days. I even see 32's on the Far Rock (A) been regularly these days, a couple weeks ago they was on the Far Rock A back to back. |

I still think the R32 should make one final run on every line they've ever run on, starting with the Q. I suppose that would be just about every B division line at this point, except maybe the L? I don't think I ever saw one on the L, but that could be because I haven't had much reason to be on the L over the years, except my days at Stuy 68-71. |

So far I think the only other cars that lasted as long without a complete rebuilding (as opposed to simply a GOH) were the last of the Gibbs Hi-Vs which went from 1904 to about 1958 and it looks like the R-32s will break that record. |

I have to laugh at newspaper and magazine articles that talk about most of the transit system’s signal system being prewar when that description is highly inaccurate. The entire BMT is 1960s or later, the oldest installation of which is City Hall Master Tower controlling the entire Bway Subway. I haven’t been to the IRT in a while, but I believe it is now entirely postwar with the oldest installation being the IRT Bway Line controlled from T/Sq Master Tower. The IND has the last of the prewar US&S and GRS lever machines and I count only 15 of those remaining although my count may be off since I’m not sure of the status of the IND east of Roosevelt Ave. I’m also not too sure if 207 and Conc Yd have had their lever machines replaced yet even though the Wash Hts and Concourse mainlines are controlled from master towers. Very little of the system’s signal system is prewar and I notice that many of the lines experiencing signal failures recently have been the ones equipped with the newest signals. |

I think they were pulled because the TA didn’t want to deal with articulation. It seems that articulation fell out of favor with transit agencies after WWII as evidenced by the CTA’s not wanting to order any more artics, opting instead for married pairs. I can’t really say that the R-9s were junk as compared with the D types since they were very similar. The principal reason that the R-1/9s lacked many of the technical amenities of BMT equipment was in all likelihood that those features were under patent to the BMT which the city was initially committed to putting out of business. The city of NY wasn’t about to pay a company it was trying to eliminate any royalties which in effect would have helped the BMT. |

The newest of the Lo-Vs could probably have lasted into the 1970s. At that time the TA considered 50 years as the maximum useful life of a railcar although the estimate was later changed to 35 years. |
