Was that R-10 shop move also the trip that ended up with platform damage to several Jerome Avenue stations?

I believe that it did cause some damage to the platform edgings. I would have liked to have been on the platform when that moved occurred.

So 8th Street and 4th Avenue was known as the "Wanamaker Terminal".

I remember the big fire back in 1956. Several firemen died fighting that blaze. It played havoc with the IRT and BMT subway lines.

Route 8 apparently lasted for a short while after the 1954 one-way conversions of Eighth Avenue from Abingdon Square to Columbus Circle, and of Seventh Avenue south of Times Square; its NB route was shifted to Hudson Street and Eighth Avenue from Canal Street to 59th Street, before its being folded into the 10.

But that 9 was discontinued in 1943 (though it did show up on a 1947 Hagstrom's map as well as a NYC Omnibus map from that same year, with a pic of bus 1773 shown - doubtless once-a-day at that point), explains its absence from the scene as of that 1954 change.

Yes, Wanamaker's was a gigantic Dept Store back in the day, even outdoing Macy*s. Many bus routes terminated there. Fifth Svenue Coach used Wanaaker Terminal on their destination signs. Wanamaker Place still exists today. The store closed in 1954, after customers moved uptown, and Astor Place lost its glamour. The fire occurred in 1956, after the stroe was vacant

AFAIK, it was only the S/B Bedford Pk platform that was damage since it’s the only one between the CYd lead and the Mosholu Yd lead. The story was that the crew was given a tk number in Mosholu Yd and told to “clear the signal.” The crew certainly did clear the signal - right off its pedestal.

As regular customers at the old Wanamaker’s, my mother and I went downtown to view as much as we could of FDNY activity. There was so much water poured into the fire that it went into the IRT subway undermining the roadbed causing it to sink I believe about 6 ft. The roadbed on tk 1 was completely replaced by a modified type II but with all ties going completely across and no trough between the rails. As a historical note, the Wanamaker store had a monorail kiddie ride that ran along the periphery of the mezzanine giving the children a view of the main floor.

The story goes that an R-17 6 train was pulling into Astor Place just as the trackbed gave way. Since the front section of the train was in the station, the conductor was able to open the doors in that section and everyone managed to get out safely. The trackbed continued to drop and the first car went down with it.

Yes- but that's still not the Wanamaker building. The Wanamaker building was where the white brick apartment building stands now- 1 block to the north of K Mart.

In fact, it was the demolition crew that accidently set the Wanamaker fire..

Any explanation for the R10 going where no R10 has gone before? "I thought it was an R12!", or maybe "Wait, IND trains are too big for IRT platforms?" ...

B division cars wouldn't clear the signals on IRT (elevated) lines? If that was the case, when they converted the Astoria line to the BMT specs, did they have to re-position all the signals? If so then the conversion was a lot more than just shaving back platforms ( and re-positioning the trip arms)

Actually Wanamaker's was in 2 buildings. The old store (the one being demolished when the fire occurred) and the "new" building where K-Mart now partially occupies.

Dual contract IRT elevated lines like Jerome were built to BMT specs like the Lex Av and Pelham subways. Prior to recent station rehabs, station platforms on those lines had metal extenders to close the gap between the actual platform edge and the narrower IRT car bodies. In the case of the els, the wooden platforms were merely built to platform IRT cars and if ever at some point connected to either the BMT or IND, then the platforms could be cut back with a circular or other type of saw as was done on the Astoria Line. As was the case with the Astoria Line, the signals were already mounted to clear 10 ft wide cars even though it wasn’t immediately necessary.
