Equipment Testing along Brighton

Posted by Transportation Hub on Sun Mar 4 09:12:34 2018

EQUIPMENT TESTING
(B) Brighton Beach-bound trains run local from Prospect Park to Kings Hwy
Days, 10 AM to 3:30 PM, Mon to Thu, until Mar 29

• Please allow additional travel time.

Hey guys. So I was on the Brighton line a few weeks back on a Monday. I checked the subway app and it said the service change posted up above. I was riding on the (Q) train and then a (B) train passed by on the Brighton express track. This was southbound. So, in my eyes, the MTA switched back to normal service at the last minute and on top of that I didn't see service change posters, saying that the southbound (B) train would stop at the local track and there was no test train either. So, does anyone know what's happening?

Why are they using revenue tracks for testing to begin with?

They use those tracks for R179 testing, the 10 car one, which has been on the property since October, 2016 if I'm correct. Damn shame that it's not in service yet and obviously is not fit for reasons I wish I knew.

The 8 car ones are tested on the Rockaway test track.

Because they can’t use the Sea Beach or Culver due to construction.

They have the Rockaway test track, one laid at great expense for this purpose.

They're testing one of the R-179 units. Often times the testing is cancelled at the last minute for various reasons, and so service remains normal.

The Rockaways test track is out of service under a general order, whereupon the track can only be used by the Division of Car Equipment for their own purposes. They usually go out there to do brake tests on equipment.

In any case, if the Rockaways test track is currently being used for some reason, the R-179s obviously can't test there at the same time.
